Reds prospect Kata returns to form
Shearn displays strikeout potential in Mexican Pacific League
By Ryan McConnell / Special to MLB.com

Matt Kata has found his power stroke.

After going homerless in 64 at-bats for the Triple-A Louisville Bats, the 28-year-old belted three long balls in 19 trips to the plate last week in the Mexican Pacific League. But while the change in approach has yielded dividends, it also had its drawbacks. The second baseman is hitting .247 and has struck out 17 times in 77 at-bats.

Here's how other Reds prospects fared during the week of Oct. 25-Nov. 1:

    Arizona Fall League:
2B Drew Anderson -- Anderson went 3-for-11 with a double, triple and two RBIs in four games. He's hitting .250 in 28 at-bats.

OF Javon Moran -- Moran's struggles continued this week. The 24-year-old went 2-for-11 in four games and is hitting .176 in 34 at-bats.

OF Cody Strait -- After tearing up AFL pitching in the first two weeks, Strait came down to earth last week, going 5-for-26 to drop his batting average to .275. He's struck out 16 times in 69 at-bats.

LHP Jonathan Coutlangus -- In three outings this week, Coutlangus tossed 1 2/3 frames and gave up one run on four hits and two walks while fanning two. He has a 1.35 ERA in 6 2/3 innings.

LHP Phil Dumatrait -- Dumatrait had his strongest outing of the fall on Oct. 31, tossing 4 2/3 innings and allowing one run on five hits and three walks while fanning three. He is 1-0 with a 4.97 ERA in 12 2/3 frames.

RHP Calvin Medlock -- In two outings this week, Medlock gave up one run in two innings, yielding two hits while striking out three. He did not walk a batter.

LHP Tyler Pelland -- Pelland has had better weeks. The 23-year-old appeared in two games and gave up nine runs on 13 hits and six walks in 3 2/3 frames. He has a 8.10 ERA in 10 innings.

    Venezuela Winter League:
2B William Bergolla -- Bergolla continued his strong Winter League campaign, going 7-for-27 with five RBIs this week. He's hitting .377 in 15 games.

SS Javier Colina -- Colina went 6-for-15 in four games, including a 3-for-4 effort on Oct. 25. He's hitting .229 with one home run and six RBIs in 48 at-bats.

SS Anderson Machado -- Machado went 1-for-4 with two walks, an RBI and a stolen base in his first three games of action this fall.

SS Ray Olmedo -- Olmedo went 5-for-14, raising his average to .300 in 40 at-bats. He's also walked eight times and stolen three bases en route to scoring 11 runs.

RHP Carlos Bohorquez -- In three appearances, Bohorquez surrendered two unearned runs on two hits and four walks in 3 1/3 frames, striking out one. The right-hander has yet to allow an earned run in seven innings and has held opposing batters to an .095 batting average.

LHP Jan Granado -- On Oct. 28, Granado yielded three runs on six hits and four walks in five innings. He's 1-0 with a 4.02 ERA in 15 2/3 innings.

    Mexican Pacific League:
1B Jesse Gutierrez -- Gutierrez slowed down after a torrid start, going 6-for-29 with one RBI in eight games. He's hitting .304 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 19 games.

RHP Tom Shearn -- Shearn won both of his starts this week, tossing 11 innings and allowing two runs on 11 hits and three walks while fanning 12. He's 2-1 with a 3.47 ERA in 23 1/3 frames.

    Dominican Winter League:
RHP Edward Valdez -- Valdez did not make an appearance this week. He has recorded one out this fall, allowing an unearned run.

1B Joey Votto -- Votto did not play this week. He is 3-for-7 with a home run and two RBIs in two games.

INF Jerry Gil -- Gil did not play this week. He went 0-for-4 in his only game.

RF Chris Denorfia -- Denorfia did not play this week. He went 0-for-3 in his only game

I guess it is news to me that Kata is considered a "prospect". Its also a surprise that he is still with the Reds - I thought he was released or opted for free agency.

Yeah, dumb headline; Kata is no where near a prospect.

He's a six-year free agent, free to sign with anyone. So are Shearn, Valdez, Colina, Granado, and Bergolla.

I think a lot of these MLB.com writers need to check their facts before they publish their articles. They seem considerably worse than writers with any other regular newspaper.

Re: Reds prospect Kata returns to form

I agree kheidg, especially considering the fact that Kata is a Rangers farmhand as of Wednesday. Per MLB.com

The Rangers did sign infielder Matt Kata to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training on Wednesday. Kata, 28, spent the 2006 season with Louisville, the Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. He batted .263 (87-for-331) with 45 runs, 20 doubles, four triples, nine home runs and 34 RBIs in 113 games.
