Pads Trade Barfield To Indians For Kouzmanoff

    FROM MLB TRADE RUMORS:

Pads Trade Barfield To Indians For Kouzmanoff
Very interesting trade just went down: the Padres sent second baseman Josh Barfield to the Indians for third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and reliever Andrew Brown.

Side effects: the Padres now have an opening at second if they want to trade for Marcus Giles, and they probably won't make a bid for Akinori Iwamura. Kevin Towers found a creative way to acquire a third baseman without spending money. Kouzmanoff, 25, did nothing but hit in the high minors this season. Baseball Prospectus's Kevin Goldstein ranked him the tenth best third base prospect in the game despite his age and health concerns.

Barfield had an OK rookie season, with a scorching July skewing the numbers a bit. He'll be just 24 next year, so there's room for improvement.

My take: odd. I thought Barfield was better regarded than that.

The Padres have been trying to find a third baseman for years.

I actually thought Andrew Brown was very highly regarded. Is that not true?

    One thing this probably means

Marcus Giles will be traded to the Padres. There have been rumors that they want him.

I've liked the Giles' for a long time now. Ever since Brian broke into the majors with the Pirates. I think it's great that they are going to get to play on the same team, in their hometown. As I recall, they are both originally from La Jolla, a San Diego suburb, so they will essentially be playing for their hometown team. That's pretty cool, IMO, for them. For the Padres, I'm not so sure. Brian has been on the decline the last couple years and Marcus, while still a good offensive 2B, isn't much of an improvement over a young Josh Barfield.

Great trade for both squads given their needs. I be very surprised if the Giles trade does not go down soon, perhaps involving Brown since Atlanta needs RP and he's ready. I really would've loved to get Giles here though. Perhaps SD is moving Linebrink and keeping Brown.

Brown killed in AAA in 2005 but his peripherals slipped last year despite a better ERA and a cup of coffee.

Kouzmanoff destroyed AA & AAA to the tune of an OPS near 1.100 and despite a low average showed decent patience and power in his call up last year. Problem is that he's blocked by Marte.

Barfield reminds me a bit of Phillips offensively -- decent avg, above average speed, some pop, little patience. Don't know much about his defensive rep.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

If the Indians hadn't let Phillips go for free they wouldn't have to be making this deal. No matter how much I dislike many of Wayne's moves this is one that I have to say was brilliant.

Does anyone know where Brown and Kouzmanoff ranked in the Indians organization?
