    Sheffield To Phillies??

His 2007 option has been exercised. The Yankees are attempting to trade him and may have several reasonable offers in place. While he says he is being blocked from talking with George, he will comply with the Yanks and write up a list of teams he would prefer to be dealt to. Sheffield still is not happy with the move and would rather accept a 2-year extension thru 2009 from the Yankees to play first. The Indians, Athletics, Orioles, White Sox, Red Sox, Angels, Cubs, Giants, Rangers, Padres, Phillies and Tigers have varying amounts of interest in him. The Phils' Gavin Floyd, Ryan Madson and Jone Lieber have been linked in a deal with Sheff. One rumor had a 3-way deal, including San Diego and the Indians in which SD would have netted Kevin Kouzmanoff, the Indians would have received Sheff and the Yanks, Scott Linebrink. The Yanks rejected the O's offer of Kris Benson and reliever. The Yanks could be intriguied by Scott Linerbink, Gerald Laird or Wil Ledezma. Several sources indicate that the Padres may be the frontrunners to acquire him, but the Yanks turned down their offer of Scott Linebrink. One rumor had Jake Peavy going to the Yankees, but it was denied by Padres' CEO Sandy Alderson. At one point, they nearly dealt him to CLE for Kevin Kouzmanoff. Tigers are engaged in serious talks with NYY, as well. A deal could be struck sooner rather than later. The Yanks prefer to deal him to the NL.

    That's from Ken Rosenthal

Why not jump in and deal Dunn to Philly for Gavin Floyd/Jon Lieber/Ryan Madson and Major League ready OF prospect

This doesn't make too much sense, IMO. The Phillies just traded Abreu in July. who is younger, faster, better glove, and have comparable salaries. I remember all the "experts" say they didn't get much in return, and Abreu still has a year left on his contract. Why would the Phillies give anything up to have a so called "cancer" on their team?

I thought this whole thing started because he didn't want to play first and the OF was full with better defenders in Abreau, Damon, Matsui and Melky.

Sheffield is a RH hitter playing in one of the tougher parks for RH hitters. He's older but may put up huge numbers in Philly. He and Howard would both be threats to hit 50+ in that park. If Philly could trade Lieber at $7 Million for Sheff they could buy a better replacement pitcher for say $8 or $9 Million. Since Abreau was penciled in at $15 and Lieber $7, Sheffield at $13 and a pitcher at $9 would be about the same difference for them. They can still move Burrell to save some bucks for other needs. If I'm Philly I do this and re-sign Delucci or maybe Luis Gonzalez or Jay Payton for LF with Sheff in RF and Rowand and Victorino in CF. Hamels, Myers, Moyer and a signing would be about as good as any rotation in the division. Use the rest Burrell's money to get a cheap catcher and 3B option. Aurilia would be a good reasonably priced fit at 3B IMO. With Utley and Rollins providing offense in the MI, they don't need a stud at 3B or Catcher IMO.

mth123 - Some of what you said makes sense. But I just read that Burrell has a complete no-trade clause and doesn't want to leave Philly. Maybe that's accurate. Maybe he just wants to be paid to leave Philly.

I don't know about that. I bet a lot of players would pay to leave Philly. I couldn't think of a worse match between a city and a player than Sheffield and Philly.

    Re: Sheffield To Phillies??

And Philly will pay Burrell to leave Philly.

He's now easily the most hated man on the Phillies after they gave away Bobby Abreu for peanuts.

Adam Dunn has it great in Cincy compared to how Burrell has it in Philly.

As for Sheff, he'd rake in that bandbox named Citizens Bank Park, but the Phils don't need a RF unless they keep David Dellucci, who IMO is more valuable to a team than GS. All this said, if Dellucci isn't with the Phils any longer, why not GS in RF for the Phils? It's just a slight downgrade market wise for GS, and since he'd demand to be the big name prima donna star, it would take more pressure off Ryan Howard who would absolutely exploded being protected by Utley and Sheff.

It could be a good thing, who knows.

According to MLB radio, the Yankees might be close to a deal that would send Sheffield to the Cubs.

    Dunn and Larue

    for

    Floyd,Madson,Burrell and cash.

That gives the Reds a starter in Floyd a possible closer in Madson and Burrell can take over for Dunn in left. The Phillies send about 5 mil to the Reds of Burrells contract and pay all of Larues. This could work.
