Dave Roberts seeking 3 year deal at $5 million per year

$5 million a year for Dave "freaking" Roberts?????

The Braves reportedly weren't willing to meet Dave Roberts' asking price of three years about $5 million per season.
It's likely that someone will, as the Brewers, Cubs, White Sox, Giants, Mets and Rockies are all showing interest in the 34-year-old. The Braves could have brought him in to play left field for a year and then maybe switched him over to center if Andruw Jones left as a free agent.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

And this is why we shouldn't have gotten too excited about this projected payroll increase the Reds went on and on about.

Decent players are getting paid much more this offseason than in seasons past.

So when we got excited that we could now afford to add a quality player or two, in reality we are adding Dave Roberts or Wes Helms types. It's just that everyone thought those types would be 2 million a year or less, not 4-5 per.

The market has changed, had our payroll not changed as well we would have been downgrading ourselves talent wise for the same money. Increasing the payroll allows us to have a very similar club to last year, not necessarily a better one.

Championships for MY teams in my lifetime:
    Cincinnati Reds - 75, 76, 90
    Chicago Blackhawks - 10, 13, 15
    University of Kentucky - 78, 96, 98, 12
    Chicago Bulls - 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98

I believe that you have just hit the nail on the head and knowing that Roberts WILL get that kind of money is ridiculous. Want to take a guess at what his salary would have been just a mere 10 years ago? In 1997?

Thats just how I feel about it. Worth is a relative term in todays MLB [actually I guess it's always been a relative term] and things have been kicked up a notch [all apologies to Emeril].

We were counting on an increased payroll in last years and years past's market-place, but we are getting an increased payroll based on old salary numbers, we're getting an increased payroll on current salary numbers. That equates to next to nothing in the grand scheme of hopes for being improved and competitive.

Here's the thing. Winning teams will not pay that kind of money to the Dave Roberts type. They will pay for the top of the market (like the Japanese pitcher in BOS) and let the idiot GMs pay for the middle to bottom of the market, the replacement type players

The CBA and rev sharing is causing this. That is why I thought the DeRosa deal was good for the Cubs. They jumped on him early and got him before everyone else gets $10/year for average production.

Talk about being born in the wrong era.....Jim Bunning had to work at a car dealership in the winter. What would he be getting in today's market?
