wilis may not be available... and other trade rumors

as posted on cnnsi... my highlights of the article

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...mlb/index.html

Two high-ranking officials from rival clubs said the Marlins had made it clear Dontrelle Willis isn't available.
    -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel

There was a buzz in the lobby yesterday of the general managers meetings, that free agent Alfonso Soriano's price could reach almost $20 million annually and that J.D. Drew's price tag is four years, $56 million. There's no question the Red Sox and Scott Boras have had multiple discussions on Drew, but Boras has shopped him and the Cubs are seriously interested.
    -- Boston Globe

Mets officials internally discussed the idea of offering Lastings Milledge and reliever Aaron Heilman to the Blue Jays for Vernon Wells, with the idea of moving the centerfielder Wells to rightfield and shifting Shawn Green to left. But Toronto would need more than that package if it were to move the All-Star Wells.

Just when it appears that our payroll is growing and we have a chance to be up there in the middle of the pack payrolls quadruple. (Maybe not quadruple but Drew at $56 million sure seems like it)

I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit.

i guess the Jays want to make sure they get a secondbasemen from NY...or they're guessing they can get a better offer.

Wells in a pitcher's park? That's a out machine waiting to happen.

If I were running the show, I would make a mad dash to offer Griffey to the Mets for that package. In truth, I'd take either Milledge or Heilman for him, but I'd start off asking for both.

I highly doubt Griffey's the guy that's gonna pull Heilman, but I hope Wayne's thought a little about the possibility of trading for him.

The guy's seriously undervalued by the Mets' braintrust.

Deal for Heilman, plug him into the #3 slot in the rotation, and spend some cash to shore up the defense and grab a bat.

I'm just not sure Wayne's wired that way.

Griffey is an almost sure bet to out OPS Wells. The obvious downside is that Wells is an almost sure bet to see the field more. A good salesman would sell the former while glossing over the latter.

A good middle reliever (and that is all Heilman has proven at this point) in exchange for an All Century player is a pretty sweet deal for the Mets.
