    Aurilia and Weathers to SF?

    From Rotoworld:

Sources told the San Francisco Chronicle that Rich Aurilia and the Giants are about to finalize a two- or three-year contract worth about $3 million per season.

It looks like the Giants are going to remain old and not very good. Aurilia will likely be a regular for the club, though whether he'll play first, second or third will be determined by what happens over the rest of the winter.

The Giants are trying to sign free agent David Weathers to be their setup man.

He could close if Armando Benitez isn't ready to go on Opening Day. Weathers figures to command at least a two-year deal worth $3 million per year. The Phillies and Dodgers are also interested.

Both are Type A for us, right? I think if they're not signed by the arbitration date, we gamble and offer arbitration. I think they're both going to want longer deals than one year and it's a gamble we can take. I understand there's a risk involved, but I think, as I said, that they'll go elsewhere and we get the compensation.

I believe that If they both sign with SF the Reds get 2 picks between the first and second round and possibly SF's 2nd rounder (the 1st rounder is in the top 15 which means they don't give that up). However if SF also signs Loretta as rumored the Reds don't get the 2nd rounder because Loretta is rated higher than Aurilia or Weathers so the Red Sox get the pick if they offer Loretta arbitration. Of course all of that is dependant on the Reds offering arbitration to thier players.

Come on Draft Picks. Time to restock the farm.

    3 years for Rich?

He can't have that much left....he's not exactly young.

I'd rather have the draft picks than Aurilia and Weathers really. They don't have much left in their aging bodies that'll help us in the long run.

    Yep.

    Amen! My thoughts exactly...

Ok, but Reds need to replace both. Need righty first sacker, sure. But also, if Weathers leaves (which is ok at this point), Reds definitely need help in the pen from the right side.

Coffey, Majewski, Belisle, that's about all that remains from the right side in the pen. If Weathers goes, somebody has to be added.

I think the recent signings of bullpen help was a sure sign Weathers was not going to be back. He pitched great for us, but I think his time is over as far as being a good bullpen pitcher.

I do not think we will miss Aurilla as much as others think. I liked him in the line up, but we need to get younger, not older. Besides he wants to play everyday and where would that happen? Thanks Rich for the last couple of years, but good luck in San Fran.

This is the one area where Cincy has been left behind. It seems like they have been in such a rush to get rid of people at the deadline that they forget about compensation. Watching some of these teams have 7-8 picks in the top 100 used to really burn me. Hopefully they load up this year.

If Rich is only seeking 3 million per year, the Reds should've tried harder to sign him. Especially when you look at how much money is being thrown around at players for offense. I know he wants to start, but you could surely platoon him at 1st base like last year and have him fill in on days off for Phillips. 3 years is definitely a little steep, but again, 3 million? That's nothing in the current marketplace.

Its not all about the money. Rich wants to be an everyday player and the Reds can't guarantee him that.
