Pierre agree to five-year deal with Dodgers

    Source: Jerry Crasnick
    ESPN.com

"Free agent center fielder Juan Pierre has agreed to a five-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a source told ESPN.com on Monday. The deal is believed to be worth $44-45 million.

The deal will become complete when Pierre passes a physical exam, the source said.

Pierre, 29, is a .303 hitter over seven seasons with Colorado, Florida and the Chicago Cubs. He led the National League with 204 hits in 2006.

The San Francisco Giants were also interested in Pierre, and had offered him a four-year deal in the $32-34 million range, a source said."

Phew! I'm really glad Pierre wasn't our plan for CF. He's the most one dimensional player in baseball IMO.

You have no idea how happy I am to know he's not coming to the Queen City.

That would have been a David Bell-esque pile of money burned on that type contract. Almost Milton-esque.

We can finally put to bed the myth for all the people with manlove for Juan Pierre that he's coming to Cincinnati.

How can it be so obvious that it is a horrible deal, yet it was done anyway? Jeez...

Does this mean that they essentially traded JD Drew for Juan Pierre? How much was Drew asking for?

The Dodgers' GM didn't have a choice in that trade-off. The previous regime negotiated an "opt out" in Drew's deal, which he exercised.

Yeah, and word has it that the Dodgers were so upset that he bailed that they wouldn't renegotiate with him.
