St. Louis to Spank Detroit Again?

I gotta believe that if this happens the Cards are stealing one!

Rumor: Cardinals and Tigers Strike Deal
Detroit radio is reporting that a deal between the two World Series teams is imminent The deal that is being reported would send Mike Maroth and Marcus Thames to the Cardinals in exchange for Juan Encarnacion and Braden Looper.

This rumor makes quite a bit of sense as both Maroth and Encarnacion have been rumored to be on their way out from their respective teams. Maroth, who went 5-2 with a 4.19 ERA as a starter for the Tigers would give the Cardinals the left handed starter they've not had since Mark Mulder went on the DL. He'd also be the cheap, inning eating pitcher the Cardinals have gravitated to in recent years.

Looper went 9-3 for the Cardinals, with an ERA of 3.56 in 69 relief appearances and would bolster the Tigers' fairly deep bullpen. The swap of Thames and Encarnacion would likely not greatly affect either club as the players are so similar. Thames hit .256 with 26 home runs and 60 runs driven in while Encarnacion batted .278 with 19 HR and 79 RBI. Encarnacion performed slightly better than Thames but has reportedly fueded with Cardinal management over playing time during the playoffs.

As always, I'll keep you updated as the situation unfolds and provide links as they become available.

Hopefully Wayne can sneak in and snatch Maroth out from under the Cards noses!! Come on Krivsky break this deal up!

St. Louis can have Maroth. But it would suck if they got Thames. He rocks.

And Thames is a guy nobody wanted until recently...he never had a regular gig or even semi regular until this year. He always tore up AAA in Toledo, but was never really given a shot until this year. Leyland got rid of Dmitri Young and gave Thames the shot he deserved. I don't recall Leyland ever receiving credit for that.

Wow.. basically Maroth and Thames for Juan Encarnacion... Whats that say about Dunns value?

    Dunn and Belisle/Coffey to Detroit
Nate Robertson and Marcus Thames or Zach Minor, Craig Monroe, and Chris Shelton to Reds

I certainly don't perceive Encarnacion being as good as Thames. Only 1 yr age difference but I think last year (plus for me previous obervation of both) shows Thames to have a much higher ceiling. I see they get on base about the same, Marcus slugs higher and Juan has higher BA.

I would think Detroit is getting the worst of this one as well overall. hmmm.... As a secondary Tigers fan I hope they do not make this deal.

If this deal has real merit we have to intervene. Both of those Detroit players would look good in Cincinnati. How good is Thames on the defensive side?

I actually really hope the Reds don't get Maroth. He's more the same soft-tossing dreck we already have.

I agree. What the Reds don't need are more soft tossers.
