    Here's a thought...what about Miguel Batista?

    Starter or closer?

The Yankees have expressed interest in free-agent right-hander Miguel Batista, agent Martin Arburua said yesterday.
Batista is a fallback option for a lot of the teams looking at Vicente Padilla, Gil Meche and Ted Lilly. Arburua said he's been contacted by half the teams in the league and that some want him as a closer.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

Depends on the cost. My guess is that in this market he's gonna get 3/24 from somebody. His best skill is that he keeps the ball on the ground and in the yard -- which would be nice to have. His K and BB rates as a starter scare me a bit though. I'd take him at 3/20 as a starter or 3/12 as a reliever, but if the Yanks are in the bidding, you can imagine that won't be enough.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Why not give hime 3/12 as a reliever then make him a starter?

Because his agent would see right through that thinly veiled attempt at short changing him. If the Reds called him I would fully expect him to say youve got a couple gapping holes in the rotation that my client could fill and want some language written into the contract that stats he gets additional money if Bautista makes more than XX starts in a season.
