JD Drew About To Sign W/ Red Sox

    Rotoworld.com

J.D. Drew's contract with the Red Sox could be worth as much as $75 million for five years, the Boston Herald reports.

If Alfonso Soriano is worth $138 million and Carlos Lee commands bids of $100 million to $112 million, Drew at $75 million is perfectly reasonable. Still, the Red Sox might not be getting any better by moving Manny Ramirez to make room for him. The Herald believes a physical might be the only hurdle remaining prior to a deal.

I'd rather have Manny on my team than J.D. Drew. Manny is the right handed anchor of that lineup. Personally, I think this could be a big mistake for the Red Sox, especially when attitudes are considered.

I also wonder what this might mean for Wily Mo. Would that put him on the move, or would he patrol left field? Sheesh, can you imagine him trying to figure out that wall?

    Attitudes?

Manny is the one who wants out, Drew wants in... so much for "attitudes" wouldn't you say?

Gosh, I'd completely forgotten that Ramirez was Mr. Personality.
We'll burn that bridge when we get to it.

Re: JD Drew About To Sign W/ Red Sox

The Sox could've kept Damon for $12M/year. They couldn't "afford" to do that. Now they're going to overpay JD Drew?

The Dodgers celebrated when he opted out of the 3 years-$33M left on his deal. Now he's getting 5 yrs.-$75 M?

    This market makes no sense.

Re: JD Drew About To Sign W/ Red Sox

The Manny/Drew question isn't all that different from the Dunn/Johnson debate going on in the other thread. How do you measure and value defense, how do you combine it with offense to get a clear picture of a player, and how do you combine that picture with issues of durability and injury risk and money?

I'd take JD Drew and the players obtained in return for Manny over just Manny.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I think JD maybe one of the most overrated players or my time. He's only had one really good year. Not worth the cash in my opinion.

JDs problem is he doesn't seem to like to play all that much. Only over 500 ABs once is his career and now entering his 30's. The odds of him playing a lot are going down, not up. Whoever signs him better have a good 4th OF.

He may be overrated and he might not be worth the money, but to he's hand only one good year is a bit of hyperbole. I'll grant that he hasn't lived up to his potential and he overrated himself when drafted (which is where much of the angst comes against him), he's had a little three of his seasons which have been pretty good (including last season). That's certainly not the model of consistency, but he's had more than one good year.

Of course you know the year I speak of is 2004. "Good" is an objective word. What I was saying is a player that is going to sign for that kind of cash sould have at lest more than one year of...

140+ games played, .275 avg, 30+ homeruns. He had that only once in 2004.

Spending $15M a year for 5 years on a guy whose history says you should expect to play around 110-115 games would not seem to be a good idea unless you are just rolling in the cash(which may be the case for the Sox).

Say what you want about Manny, but he's always on the field and he's always producing better than about 99% of the league.

    I wouldn't trade him.
This is the time. The real Reds organization is back.
