    Willis available?

    From the NY Post

With Igawa at the back of the rotation the Yankees still need a starter, but it doesn't appear in the final days of November that they will sign Barry Zito, Gil Meche, Ted Lilly or Jason Schmidt. Andy Pettitte would be welcome, but he hasn't decided if he wants to pitch.

They could put together a package headed by Melky Cabrera and Humberto Sanchez to lure the Marlins into moving Dontrelle Willis out of Miami.

Gotta figure the Marlins would ask for Hughes instead of Sanchez. Also think the Marlins want a speedy center-fielder type.

    Oooh. Me next!

The Reds could put together a package headed by Joey Votto and Travis Wood to lure Johan Santana out of Minneapolis.

That was fun! Now call me a journalist and let me vote for the HOF!
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

That was pretty darn good. You made no mention of Deferred Salary or of a "confirmed source". Your BBWAA card is now revoked!
It's absolutely pathetic that people can't have an opinion from actually watching games and supplementing that with stats. If you voice an opinion that doesn't fit into a black/white box you will get completely misrepresented and basically called a tobacco chewing traditionalist...

    Have you ever noticed?

EVERY time some star player is on the trade market all we hear is how the Yankees, Red Sox & Mets are going to trade their supposed top prospects for them. The national press way overrates these teams' prospects and acts like the rest of baseball is the farm system for these three teams.

    Re: Willis available?

My point was that this isn't even a rumor. There's no source suggesting that a conversation is taking place or that one team has made an offer. It's pure speculation along the lines of what we see on this board every day. The only difference is they get paid lots of money to do it and get called experts for it.

I want baseball journalists to provide information that I don't already know, but to which they have access because they've put in time and effort cultivating relationships and doing investigative work. Alternately, I want them to have some expertise which allows them to provide insightful commentary in regards to the first thing (BaseballProspectus). This kind of random speculation with little or no basis in reality from real news sources just clogs the airwaves/pages. If I wanted random speculation, there's a water cooler in my office.

A package headed by Melky Cabrera and Humberto Sanchez really doesn't sound that intriguing to me. I would really hope the Marlins could get more from the Yankees than that. Any package would have to start with Philip Hughes.
That hit was plenty fair. Atleast by a quarter of an inch.

Sanchez is going to be very good whenever he gets his chance. He looks to be a real option for the Yankees in the rotation. I'm not sure I wouldn't rather have him that D-Train when you consider the future cost of Willis.

Unfortunately, it seems to me that most baseball reporters and beat writers are more concerned with staying in the good-graces of the people they have to cover on a daily basis then they are with actually providing thoughtful analysis or great writing.

There are some exceptions -- but a lot of what I read from around the country isn't much better than what you quoted below. I guess I can't really blame them, though -- they have to produce a lot of product, often on an extremely tight schedule, and work in an environment where they are totally dependant on the people they cover being open and candid with them in order to do their jobs.

I'd be reluctant to be hard-hitting and insightful if it meant that, tomorrow, suddenly the GM or the players were refusing to talk to me in the locker room and preventing me from earning a living.

I would be willing to bet that he is going somewhere. He will cost more this year than last year. They wanted to get rid of him last year due to salary. I am sure they still have their ears open. When the pitching market dries up, I am sure some team will knock at the door with some major league ready prospects behind them.

    But maybe I am crazy
