I really think this is a decent albeit minor move. His bat may never develop, but he's reportedly good behind the plate. That can be helpful to young pitchers. Plus the Reds might have two starters in AA next year that don't speak English as a first language. He can help there too.

The difference is, if the older chaff gets hot for a couple of months and the team is not in contention, you can flip them to a contender who needs a vet bat off the bench or a veteran MR who knows how to play the game. If you aren't out of it, you keep them and hope they stay hot for 162. If they suck, you cut them and try again. If you do it right, there can be some value in the churn.
