Jason Jennings to the Houston Astros??

    Rockies not done dealing
    Thursday, Dec 14, 2006 11:01 am EST
A day after the Colorado Rockies shipped staff ace Jason Jennings to the Houston Astros in exchange for three players, general manager Dan O'Dowd said other moves could be in the works.

"We're not done yet," O'Dowd said Wednesday. "We feel like we'e improved our team, but doing this trade also puts us in a position to be flexible and make some moves if we think they'll help us."

Colorado had previously shown interest in Tampa Bay Devil Rays outfielder Rocco Baldelli.

    Other rumors:
San Diego one more time to the Wells?
    Thursday, Dec 14, 2006 10:48 am EST

The San Diego Padres welcomed 333 career victories to their club Wednesday when four-time Cy Young Award winner Greg Maddux was officially introduced.

By next week, they could add 230 more wins to the starting rotation in the large person of David Wells.

The veteran left-hander campaigned to return to the Padres during a radio interview Wednesday morning, and general manager Kevin Towers plans to have dinner with Wells on Monday to discuss the pitcher's situation.

    Pads make offer to Giles
    Thursday, Dec 14, 2006 11:05 am EST
San Diego Padres' GM Kevin Towers said he made a contractual offer yesterday to second baseman Marcus Giles, the former Atlanta Braves regular who became a free agent on Tuesday night. The proposal is believed to be worth $3 million to $4 million.

The New York Mets reportedly also are interested in Giles. An executive with another major league club said he wouldn't be surprised if the Boston Red Sox also made a play for him.

    Wainwright ready to start
    Thursday, Dec 14, 2006 11:14 am EST

The St. Louis Cardinals appear to have a new member of the starting rotation for 2007, and he wasn't acquired through free agency. He is Adam Wainwright.

With reliever Jason Isringhausen healthy for opening day, or shortly thereafter, the Cardinals have Wainwright, a starter his entire career before blossoming as a reliever during his rookie season, to fill one of the club's two open spots.

    Pitchers in the Cards
    Thursday, Dec 14, 2006 11:30 am EST
Tuesday's non-tender deadline freed one starting pitcher that the St. Louis Cardinals have interest in – Seattle's Joel Pineiro.

Other intriguing free agent pitchers include Tony Armas Jr. and Tomo Ohka. Ohka's agent said Wednesday seven teams have expressed interest in the righthander, but a Cardinals official said they are not among them.

On the trade front, the Los Angeles Dodgers are dangling starter Brad Penny as a spark for talk with the Cardinals.

    Arizona searching for arms
    Thursday, Dec 14, 2006 11:31 am EST
Arizona Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes continues in search of a possible trade to upgrade the pitching staff.

He won't comment on any potential deals and has refrained from publicly discussing possible free-agent signings.

Names making the rounds in connection with Arizona, however, include Texas Rangers reliever Akinori Otsuka, Oakland A's starter Dan Haren and free agent left-hander David Wells.

Yanks and Sox fight for reliever Gonzalez
    Wednesday, Dec 13, 2006 10:27 am EST
Is there anything the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees won't fight over? Now it's Pittsburgh Pirates' lefty reliever Mike Gonzalez.

The Yankees, who have tried countless ways to get a dependable arm in front of Mariano Rivera since Jeff Nelson's and Mike Stanton's first tour of the Bronx, believe Gonzalez could be the guy.

The Red Sox, who acquired Gonzalez from the Pirates on July 22, 2003, and dealt him back nine days later, have dangled outfielder Coco Crisp, but it is probably going to take more than that.

Wainright is now going to start? That hurts.

I thought Duncan said he was so impressive during the playoffs coming out of the pen that they were going to keep him there.

I'm glad. Wainwright is nothing special as a starter, check his minor league stats.
    I miss Adam Dunn.

    Okay..

    http://www.thebaseballcube.com/playe...inwright.shtml

What exactly is there not to like? He excelled in the lower minors, maintained good k/bb to IP ratios.. WHIP was high coming back from an injury plagued year, but I think he showed the aptitude to adjust, and I'd say he broke out this year coming out of the pen - absolutely dominating during the playoffs.

The guy has some filthy stuff. And working with Duncan certainly doesn't hurt. Its not like he's Danny Graves trying to start... Cards eased him in to the show with a stint in the pen - and challenged him when they needed him most. He certainly answered the call.

Is Jon Papelbon going to suck as a starter now that he's been in the pen a year?

I agree that Wainwright could do well as a starter, but it does put another inexperienced starter in the rotation for the Cards and weakens their bullpen.

A rotation including Reyes, Wells and Wainwright, plus a starter to be named, leaves alot of question marks for the Cards, who usually start out with a pretty solid rotation. It appears they will start out with a pretty weak rotaion, and little depth behind them.

Lat year, they started out with Reyes and Wainwright in reserve. This year, they'll have Looper and Hancock (assuming Looper isn't in the rotation to start).
