Olmedo on a nice roll in VWL

Ray Olmedo had a taste of the Major Leagues. Now, the 25-year-old is looking to prove he deserves a return trip. The middle infielder put his best foot forward this week in the Venezuelan Winter League, collecting six hits in 16 at-bats to improve his batting average to .301. Olmedo is also showing impressive plate discipline, drawing 22 walks in 123 at-bats for a .408 on-base percentage.
It's a big step up from his career .230 batting average in 352 Major League at-bats. He'll look to keep it up in order to latch on with the Reds this spring.
Several other Reds prospects are playing in the various Winter Leagues this offseason. Here's how they fared during the week of Dec. 13-19.

    Venezuelan Winter League:

IF Luis Bolivar -- Bolivar continued his strong winter campaign this week, collecting nine hits in 17 at-bats to improve his batting average to .301. The 25-year-old has scored 26 runs and knocked in 17 over 173 at-bats.
SS Alex Gonzalez -- Gonzalez enjoyed a solid first week in the VWL, going 5-for-20 with a double, homer and three RBIs.
IF Anderson Machado -- Machado appeared in two games this week and went hitless in three at-bats. The 25-year-old is batting .222 with two RBIs in 54 at-bats.
RHP Carlos Bohorquez -- Bohorquez retired two batters in his lone appearance, walking two without giving up a hit. The 25-year-old hasn't allowed a run in 7 2/3 frames and owns a sparkling 1.31 ERA over 20 1/3 innings.
LHP Jan Granado -- Granado appeared in one game and tossed three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk without a strikeout. He's 2-1 with a 5.17 ERA over 38 1/3 innings.

    Mexican Pacific League:

IF Juan Castro -- Castro started his Winter League play on Dec. 19 and went 1-for-4 with a double. The 34-year-old hit .284 with two home runs and 14 RBIs in 95 at-bats for the Reds last season.
1B Jesse Gutierrez -- Gutierrez went 4-for-17 with a homer and two RBIs in six games. He's hitting .261 with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs in 218 at-bats.
OF Norris Hopper -- Hopper went 1-for-10 in two games, dropping his batting average to .296. The 27-year-old has two home runs and 18 RBIs in 135 at-bats.
RHP Daniel Guerrero -- Guerrero allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while fanning two in four innings on Dec. 15. The 21-year-old has a 3.00 ERA in six innings, striking out four and walking one.
RHP Tom Shearn -- Shearn's terrific season hit a road block on Dec. 16, when he allowed three runs on three hits and three walks while fanning two in 1 1/3 innings. Still, the 29-year-old is 6-3 with a 2.76 ERA in 71 2/3 innings.

    Dominican Winter League:

OF Chris Denorfia -- Denorfia did not play this week. He's hitting .258 with 12 RBIs in 93 at-bats.
3B Edwin Encarnacion -- Encarnacion has been flashing the skills that made him a regular for the Reds last year, hitting .292 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 72 at-bats.
C Chad Moeller -- Moeller has yet to get acquainted with his surroundings, collecting two hits in his first 29 at-bats.
1B Joey Votto -- The highly touted first-base prospect is hitting .275 with a .413 on-base percentage in 51 at-bats. He has one homer and seven RBIs.
RHP Johnny Cueto -- Cueto has surrendered six runs in 6 1/3 innings, walking five and striking out six while allowing 10 hits.
"panic" only comes from having real expectations

I think Chad has yet to get aquainted with actual skills.

I really don't know why the Reds are allowing Cueto to even pitch in the DWL. Kid threw 138 innings this year, which was a huge boost over what he threw last year. Shut him down and let his arm get rested for the 2007 season.
    I miss Adam Dunn.

OBM, he has only thrown 6 1/2 innings, and they came over a month ago. He hasnt thrown a pitch in a long time.
