At least seven people perished in a fire that gutted the Emmons Junior apartment building Saturday night in Huntington, WV. This is a 64 unit, five floor apartment building located about one block from my firm's law office. What is particularly of personal concern is that our office runner, a college student, lived in either the Emmons Junior or the Emmons Senior apartment building next door, and we were unable to contact him yesterday.
Several other people are still missing, as firefighters have not yet been able to reach upper floors. None of the identities of the deceased have yet been released, but news accounts stated that one woman lost three teenaged children in the tragedy.
The apartment building was constructed in about 1924. It did not have a sprinkler system.
