The Florida Marlins ace agreed Monday to a one-year contract for $6.45 million, a hefty salary for the team with the lowest payroll in the major leagues by far last year.

If Harang signs for Willis money I'd be pleased as punch.

I'd offer him 4 years, $30 million plus incentives, and I would spread the money out evenly. By the 4th year of the deal, $7.5 million would seem like a total bargain.

Exactly. Harang thinks 2006 was the start of the rest of his career.

I was a little shocked that Willis signed for that. My first thought was they had reported the number wrong.

Yeah -- but never underestimate the enticement of guaranteed money to a guy playing a position where all it takes is one bad throw to wreck a career.

Re: Willis sets the bar for Harang

One variable is that Willis was in the three-year class, technically, so he had a more limited set of players he could compare himself to in front of an arbitrator. $6.45 million is pretty dadgum good for a first-timer. Harang is in the four-year class and has a wider pool of players to compare himself to. Of course, he doesn't quite have Willis' star power, either.

From the MLB Contracts page at: http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/200...eligibles.html

Other starting pitchers in Harang's arb class with 4+ years of service: Mark Prior, Jeremy Bonderman (signed 4/$38M), Mark Hendrickson (signed 1/$2.925M), Oliver Perez (signed 1/$2.325M), Dave Williams (signed 1/$1.25M), Brett Myers, Horacio Ramirez. Bonderman looks like the best comp; if we could bring Harang in the vicinity of those numbers, I'm all for it.

Edit: Hmmm... I'm not so sure about some of the service-time numbers on that page. I initially posted Willis was a first-time arb-eligible, as someone with barely 3 years of service should be, but I know he was arb-eligible last winter also. So don't take the above as gospel.

Further edit: Yeah, Willis' number is off on that page. He has nearly four years of service, not barely three, and he was a "super-two" last year and thus eligible for arbitration. So he and Harang are both second-time arb guys, but Harang is a year ahead of him in terms of his "class" (4+ years to Willis' 3+). I'm not sure what that means in terms of who their arbitration comps can be.

One last comment: I was wrong, the page is right (probably). I was reading Willis' 3.143 as a percentage, i.e. three and about one-sevenths year of service, but the number after the decimal is days. Willis has three years plus 143 days of major-league service, which sounds about right. (172 is the threshold for a "year" of service time.)

I'm sure if security was all Harang was after, the Reds would have already signed him for 5 years at $5M per year. The Reds would be thrilled and Aaron would have his security.

My understanding is that all first-timers are subjected to the same limitations as far as comps go, regardless of whether those first-timers are super-twos or not. That means that all second-timers would also be subject to the same comp rules as all other second-timers. And, of course, all third-timers have unlimited access to comps.

If the Reds want to this will get done. After his first year I would say that WK's best attribute is in contract negotiation.
