His comment about Earl, the Hall and the Series was a classic. Who was that ump? He was priceless.
And this is why I have always loved Earl Weaver. His freakouts were really so much fun to watch. Seriously, the guy had to laugh his butt off about himself when he got home.
One of my favorites was in one of his classic umpires where he started yelling at the umpire, and tried to get into his face. However, he found the bill of his cap got in the way...so he turned his cap around. The ump about lost it.
I miss seeing guys like that on the field - guys who wanted to win so much, it hurt every time a call did not go their way.

Todays umpires wear their numbers on their sleeves kinda as a ranking for seniority and also how good they are. I'm not sure if that was the case back then but if it was then that ump was likely a long time veteran with a pretty good reputation in order to achieve that lofty number.
As a veteran High School umpire myself, I really enjoyed that.

Bill Haller, Umpire
Haller was "an umpire's umpire," according to fellow ump Dave Phillips. One of the last to wear an outside chest protector, Haller was assistant supervisor of AL umpires in 1983-85, but was fired, he believes, because of his refusal to work a game during the 1984 umpires' strike. His brother Tom was a ML catcher.
Jul 14, 1972 - In a ML first‚ the plate umpire and the catcher in a game are brothers. Bill Haller is the ump and Tom Haller is the Tigers catcher during a game with the Royals. Kansas City wins 1-0.
During the 1972 season the Haller brothers were both in the AL and Earl Weaver complained to league president Joe Cronin that Bill may "lean one way or another". Cronin (whose wife's family owned the Minnesota Twins) did shift Bill from working at least one series.

Any idea what game that is? I'm curious as to who the home plate umpire was - he looked familiar.
It was Ken Kaiser. The game was played September 17, 1980. The Orioles won the game.
One thing I found funny was Weaver kept refering to how he was going in the HOF, kinda aluding to what a big shot he was. At his induction ceremony, I am paraphrasing, but I will never forget that he said something along the lines that while he was ejected a record amount of times, each and every time he was ejected he said he deserved it and the umpires were always in the right!!

The funniest thing about the clip to me is there were probably about 2,000 people in the stands. It looked like an Expos game.
Bill Haller was behind the plate the next night. I wonder who won the game?

if IIRC, in Luciano's book, he devoted an entire chapter to his run-ins with Weaver. The stuff Earl could come up with was classic.
