    Sosa signs with Texas

Sosa and the Rangers finalized a minor league contract Tuesday. If added to the major league roster, he would get a $500,000, one-year deal with the chance to earn $2.1 million more in performance bonuses.

There are plenty of FA's still out there who could be a passable DH for the Rangers. I can't help but think this is cheap publicity for the Rangers and shame on them for doing it.

    Low risk high reward.

IMO outstanding move by the Rangers.

    $500,000?

Isn't that the same figure he called "insulting" a year ago?

Again, as with McGwire, there is no proof that Sosa ever did anything wrong. He has never to anyone's public knowledge tested positive for anything. And he's been out of the game for a year. Assuming he's healthy, and patient, he could put up some pretty good numbers.

It's going to be awfully hard to keep 600 HR's out of the HOF.

I agree. Everything I've indicates he is motivated to make it back to the bigs. If he makes the team the ballpark in Arlington won't hurt him either.

A couple of weeks ago, their GM said something about Shammy coming in somewhat humbled.

He probably didn't want to play in RFK because it's too much of a pitcher's park.

I don't think it will be that hard. I know someone who hit 583 homers who couldn't even get 25% of the vote. Sosa had a pretty good season power-wise in '97. 36 homers and a 119 RBI's. .251/.300/.480 as well which is not that great. Then, he has the '98 season of 66/158/.308/.377/.647. Somehow, someway Sammy Sosa was able to hit more homers that year than anybody ever had before. More than the Babe, Williams, Mantle, Mays, Gehrig or Greenberg. Sosa's era is the era when one season Bret Boone had 141 RBI's at the age of 32 after having exactly ONE season of over 74 before. Remember Brady Anderson and the 51 homer season? I could go on. You know all the numbers. There's the proof right there that something wrong happened. The drug testing was and still is a joke. The numbers, more than the chiseled body of a once skinny outfielder, are the real proof.

i don't care if sosa has or has not ever used steriods, i despise him regardless. i have never liked him. he seems to be all about himself and seems that inflating his numbers may be his only goal. i'm just glad he signed with texas and not someone in the nl central, so i don't have to hear as much about him...

He won't make the major league roster.
