    Foulke retiring

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2767796

I figured he wouldn't work out in Cleveland, although I didn't see him retiring before ST. The guy has clearly not been the same pitcher since 2004. The Indians seem to be adopting the Reds philosophy on relief pitching, which is sign a bunch of crappy old guys and hope one or two of them pans out. Unfortunately for them, Foulke is no longer an option

I think the theory is "don't waste a bunch of money on a proven closer, but sign anyone you can who has had closer experience and hope they pitch like they did when they successfully closed games." As with everything there are exceptions.

Cleveland signed Foulke for $5M plus incentives.

If he retired for injury related reasons, he would still get his $5M.

bad news for the Reds. Makes it likely both Cabrera and Davis have a bullpen spot(both are out of options).

ESPN says he will not get the money...

If he would have stayed on for another week he would have, but he decided to come forward early to be honest about it, and not screw the team.

This from the Indian Website (first caught it on SoSH):

By coming to this decision now -- as opposed to a few weeks from now -- Foulke protected the Indians from being on the hook for his $5 million contract. He very easily could have reported to camp, fought through the pain and eventually landed on the disabled list, collecting paychecks.

Foulke didn't want to take that route.

Very nice thing for him to do.

Although, since it's the Indians, I would have liked to see them get screwed

Wow, absolutely. I can't even say that if I was in the same situation I would be that honest and forward about it. Of course I'm not in the position Keith is in of having already banked millions of dollars either. Probably a lot easier to do the right thing if you already got millions in the bank collecting interest.
