For some reason, its more fun to watch them on TV than by popping in a video. Not sure why that is, but I'm the same way. I thought I was just nutty that way.

Me too. I think it has to do with laziness. At least on my part. I usually don't have the time to watch much TV during the week. So most of mine is during the weekends. And then I have a hard time getting the TV in the living room because my wife has it glued to the Lifetime Movie Network.

So I'll go lie on the bed and, as Seinfeld characterized it, "hunt" through the channels.

But to get off that nice, comfortable bed to slip in a DVD? Too much of an effort.

A man after my own heart. I have collected pretty much all of Eastwood and Wayne's classic westerns. Yet when they are on TV - just watched "A Fistful Of Dollars" for the zillionth time the other night - I gotta watch'em!

A western some of my satellite channels has been repeatedly showing lately is "Tombstone," and everytime it comes on I start watching it. A great guy flick with plenty of action, good characters, a wonderful cast, and great lines.

"You're a daisy if you do" (I've read that the real Doc Holiday said those lines)
"You ought to be in bed, Doc; why are you doing this?----Wyatt Earp is my friend.----Hell, I've got lots of friends.----I don't."

"You tell 'em I'm coming and Hell's coming with me!"
"Are you going to draw that smokewagon or are you just going to stand there and bleed?"
"I don't think I'm going to let you arrest us today Behan."
"Maybe poker's not your game Ike. I know-let's have a spelling contest."

Bet you know women who like westerns (Stagecoach, Red River, Unforgiven, The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, etc., etc.) and Bond films...especially those w/ Mr. Connery, Mr. Brosnan and Mr. Craig..

Gals can certainly like guy flicks---but the movies are still guy flicks!

I know. Is that thing ever going to leave cable? Maybe they should start a Tombstone Channel as much as it's been on.

yet I still watch it, even though I have the DVD.

A great guy flick with plenty of action, good characters, a wonderful cast, and great lines.

I think Kilmer did one heck of a job as Doc, and I'm not a big fan of his.

I think gals like them fer different reasons though.

Reminds me of that Seinfeld episode when they were talking about if a guy can say a man is good looking. George can't make himself do it, so Elaine says that acknowledging it does not make a man a homosexual. George responds "It can't help"

I probably like good classic westerns for the same reason you do, GAC. And on a Sat. morning an old "oater" feels like comfort food.

I think you'd be hard pressed to go wrong with any of the "Mafia" movies -- Godfather I & II, Scarface, Casino, Goodfellas, etc. I've yet to meet a guy that wouldn't put at least one of those movies in his top-20 all time.

The "sports comedies" also usually figure somewhere onto most guys lists -- Caddyshack, Major League, Kingpin, Slapshot, Bull Durham.

I think a lot of guys in my generation also have a "80s Nostalgia" thing, so you'll get a lot of mentions for The Goonies and The Karate Kid.

I wouldn't put any sci-fi or fantasy movies on the "guy flicks" list, other than possibly Terminator and Terminator II -- the social stereotype is that sci-fi/fantasy fans are nerds. Nerds and "Guy Flicks" don't match up.

On the action/drama front, it's hard to go wrong with any of the Die Hard movies, any Tarrantino flick (especially Pulp Fiction), or any martial-arts type film (even the Segal movies).

What about "prison films?" Shawshank Redemption is the quintessential guy movie. Cool Hand Luke, Escape from Alcatraz, and some others are good guy flicks too, but I don't know a guy who doesn't like Shawshank. And of course for cheesecake factor, there are the "women in prison" films like Caged Heat and Reform School Girls (with the theme song by Wendy O. Williams).

I would add Bloodsport, Van Dam's only great flick.

How about "Women In Chains" (which actually has a plot, but is CAMPY) and "Chained Heat II" (which is only CAMPY and BAD)!

Really? I never thought of it like that. I focused more on the satire of the "sad-sack guy pulls together a band of misfits" aspects of the film. That, along with the wicked jabs at male ineffectuality and self-pity.

All those layers are what makes it so good.

Oh, totally, it's a great movie all-around, one of my favorites actually. But just that one aspect of it is completely unique to that film. Insomnia, really severe insomnia, is a bizarre state of mind and hard to capture simply because when fully awake, you can't grasp it, and when actually in that state, you can't communicate it. That movie actually did, with the weird cuts and flashes; I've never really seen anything else successfully do it. So that's just a little part of a great movie that stuck with me.

Ok, I've been avoiding this because I suspect the can of worms regarding definition here is a bottomless one, but how in the world is Shawshank a guy movie? I can see excessively violent films, I can see female booty films or flatulence-centric films if I must give up a definition (even if I don't necessarily agree with it), but Shawshank is just a brilliant, complex and deeply philosophical film. Maybe the relationships are male-based, true, but their humanness trumps that, I think. To me that is pretty much a quintessential human movie, not a guy one.
