Sampson's first year to date in IU

How do you feel he is doing as a coach?

Not as a recruiter since he will be having a hard time doing that with the probation he is carrying from his oklahoma days... ( he did manage to swipe eric Gordon from Illinois though... only the best prospect from Indiana in over 30 years)

Sampson is a cheating scumbag that ran away from OU as quickly as possible when he found out the NCAA was dropping the hammer on the program. It's laughable they hired him after the Bob Knight situation.

I agree completely with his morals but I think he is 85% of this season. The defense is looking impenetrable

I think thats going a little too far and the "Bob Knight situation" was 6 years ago.

Well no matter what you think about Knight he doesn't cheat, and that's what bothered me about the Sampson hiring. IU has never even had whispers of cheating and now we have a coach that everyone knows has cheated.

He made phone calls, he wasnt paying players. It was wrong he admitted it move on. Knight should have left 5 or 6 years before he was fired, the program had slipped and he just wasnt into it. I am an IU fan was is glad Knight is gone.

Yeah that was rough. IU really just isn't a very good defensive team right now.

I haven't read anything but I have a feeling AJ and Wilmont were not at 100%. AJ came off the court at one of the timeouts looking like he was going to die.

Also as far as leaving before the hammer was dropped OU has two years probation IU ended up getting one for hiring him. I wouldn't exactly say he really averted that much punishment.

I said it the first game Calloway missed. We are going to struggle to beat anybody without him. He runs that offense and he's the best defender on the other team's point guard we have. And we're definetely not going to beat anybody if Suhr has to play a majority of the game.

And I don't think there was anything wrong with Ratliff or Wilmont, I think they were benched because they weren't playing very hard. They weren't boxing out and they weren't playing defense. But I don't know that for sure.

That could be, or it could be a combination. Like I said just an observation that Ratliff in particular looked gassed and that was after only being in the game 2 or 3 minutes.

It's pretty easy to admit you're wrong after you're caught. I support IU. I supported them when Davis was there. I just wish they'd have hired someone with a clean record. The rule does seem small and insignificant, but it's still a rule. I do think Sampson is a good coach and I'd rather have him over Davis.

And how can you say the program had slipped under Knight? They went to the National Championship the year he was fired. He said before he was fired that that team was underrated and would go far in the tournament. He had players that bought into his system. And it definitely went down hill when his guys graduated or left.

Re: Sampson's first year to date in IU

I think the real test will be next year. Eric Gordon is the #1 recruit in the nation and should DJ White stick around which I believe he should and will, then I see IU making a serious run at the national championship.

I voted for solid because I think considering the horrible mess he was left from the "Davis era" he has done a pretty good job. Sampson a couple practices in to this year realized how poorly coached the team had been the past few years. He started from scratch and showed the players basic fundamentals such as blocking out, rebounding, setting picks etc. that they have not been taught properly the past few years.

I agree with alot of you that the phone call issue is not a good one, but we all have made mistakes and I dont think Coach Sampson should be punished for the rest of his career for it especially considering they weren't the most horrible of violations. However should he break another rule, even a minor one, then he will lose my support. .
