Some Photos From a Snowy Day in DC

On Sunday, Washington, D.C. had that rarest of rare things--a legitimate snowfall. It's fairly common to wander around this city and snap photos of the buildings and monuments, but the opportunity to do so with a nice coating of snow on the ground is rare.

So, as the snow was winding down, my wife and I hurried out and began snapping some shots before it all melted away. I think D.C. is a gorgeous city, but it takes on a completely different character in the snow. I've attached some of the shots I took here--hope you enjoy them.

Our condo building, in the middle of the snowstorm:

The White House, from Lafayette Park:

St. John's Church, across from the White House on 16th St. It's a very old church, many of the presidents have worshipped here:

    One of my favorite shots.

Another one of the White House:

Statue in front of the Treasury Building:

Lamp posts at the gates to the White House:

The World War II Memorial, with the Lincoln memorial in the background. (Sorry, no American Idol contestants today...)

    ...more to come.
We'll burn that bridge when we get to it.

    The Jefferson Memorial:

Cherry trees around the Tidal Basin:

Jackson Place homes and buildings, IMO one of the most beautiful streets in D.C. This is across from the White House:

    The Supreme Court building:

The Old Executive Office Building, next to the White House:

The Corcoran Gallery of Art, one the best (and most beautiful) museums in D.C.:

The Washington Monument from the Ellipse:

Statue at the Reflecting pool in front of the Capitol Building:

Those are some great pics. I have an uncle who lives in DC - it's been too long since I've visited up there, especially only living a few hours away.

Nice shots and thank you for sharing. Both of my siblings live in D.C., so I am famaliar with most of the places you were at when taking these pics. I have only been on visits during warmer weather and it is cool to see these things with snow on them.

Remind me of one thing... didn't a person die in battle if their statue on a horse has the horse raising in the air on it's hindlegs? Like the one that you posted of General Lafayette.

The pics came out nicely, but really the city was an absolute mess on Sunday. The pic I posted above of the Tidal Basin shows you what most of the streets were like--a slushy mess. And we headed back home right as the freezing rain was starting. Don't want to be out in that. Typpically, there are a lot more people out. But not on Sunday. Not that I was complaining.

That's *technically* true, but in reality I believe only a third or so of the statues in DC actually conform to this. Most of it is done for artistic purposes.

The rule is supposed to be, I believe:

Horse has two legs in the air = rider died in battle
Horse has one leg in the air = rider died from wounds suffered in battle
Horse has all legs on the ground = rider died of natural causes, or otherwise from something not related to the battle
We'll burn that bridge when we get to it.

Here's what snopes has to say on the matter.
