Spring Training and the Regular Season

Excitement about the early performances of Josh Hamilton and Brandon Phillips leads me to wonder about whether or not any statistical research has been done correlating spring training statistics with the regular season. Conventional wisdom has it, of course, that "spring games have nothing to do with the regular season."

Is this true? Anyone got some info that proves the case either way?

    Thanks in advance...

Here's a link that Dracodave over on Reds Live! offered up. Pretty interesting blog post about this topic:

Re: Spring Training and the Regular Season

Interesting post & link. Notice that BA has virtually no correlation while OBP and SLG are slightly more correlated (though still quite weakly). Further evidence towards the notion of certain skills being predictable and relatively slump-proof. Batting average is simply a very bad predictive statistic.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
