    Questionable Mail

Yesterday I got a letter from the "Warranty Department" claiming that the warranty on my vehicle was getting close to expiring and that if I called soon I could get a 25% discount.

First of all my truck is pretty new. Secondly I purchased an extended warranty at the time of purchase. There is no chance my warranty is anywhere near running out. Thirdly this mailing says nothing about the automaker, they just refer to themselves as the warranty department. I've recieved other warranty stuff from GM and it always says GM and refers to my truck specifically.

So I call them up to investigate. I never tell them who I am but I first ask what automaker they work with. All of them is the response. Then I tell them that I'm not sure which of vehicles the letter is referring and I am told that because of privacy laws they don't have the info, I'll have to pass along the VIN number of my cars for them to clarify.

    Uh huh.

Now get this, I called a few different times because they kept hanging up on me instead of answering my questions and each time it sounded like the same voice. The first guy I talked to said, "hello, this is Marcus" when I called. Then just for fun I called early this morning before their so called business hours and sure enough I get an answering machine, "this is Marcus".

I believe this to be some sort of identity theft scam and who knows how many people they are getting. Who do I contact to report this? Does anyone have any idea.

The kicker was they told me that the automaker had given them my info and that it was their job to contact me and let me know about this and that the automakers sell their product but for much more money so that the only people trying to rip me off were the dealers. Uh huh. Well if they are trying to rip me off why I they giving my info to someone else who is going take their business?

I'd call the police (non emergency number) and ask them who to call. I'd probably also call a local TV station. I know here in Dayton we have an NBC affiliate that looks into stuff like this (companies ripping off consumers, fraud, etc) and they'd be interested in hearing your story and would know the proper channels to further it.

I've received a lot of those notifications as well. I just throw them away. Maybe next time I get one, I'll call that NBC affiliate and have them research it.

Your VIN can be purchased through Choicepoint, I believe. I'm trying to think what someone could do with it that would be devious.

    Re: Questionable Mail

Well I think they were looking for more than the VIN number. Who knows, I wasn't about the find out. I think the VIN thing was their way around the question, which of my vehicles was the notification about.

I believe they have my name and address and that is it at this point. They are looking for more.

Maybe they are legit but a company that represents ALL the manufacturers and I get, Marcus twice in four calls? Uh huh.

I also asked for their company name. The answer, "depends". Depends? On what? They apparently don't have a company name. And they aren't he maker of the vehicle. Well who the heck is it?

If I were you, I would also make a copy of the letter and provide it to the dealership where you purchased the vehicle.

I'll be interested to see what comes of all this.

IIRC, we get these warranty letters like these every so often as well. I look at them, say "pffft", and pitch them.

There is a lot of goofy stuff that comes in the mail designed to entrap the unsuspecting.

Before you extend your warranty with Marcus please contact me. I'll beat his price by 10 %. (just kidding, of course)

    That is summarily awesome.

    Re: Questionable Mail

We got something very similar to this last week as well. Our landlord installed a security system before we moved in and last week we got a letter supposedly from our security system company that said our system was not being monitored and they were providing a chance to get monitoring again for a limited time. Well, our landlord handles the alarm system so he should get the letter so we smelled a fish right away. Then, they didn't even have an authentic logo on the letter and the letter wasn't very professional. So one of my roommates parents contacted the police about it to hopefully save others from the scam.
