    Rockies release Danny Graves

    Rockies released RHP Danny Graves.

Graves gave up six earned runs and had a 0/7 K/BB ratio in four innings this spring.

Could this be the end of the line for our all-time saves leader?
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

    That's a shame.
But, I would be surprised if no other team picked him up - there seems to be a market for dead-armed relievers. My money is on him going to KC, Tampa Bay or Washington.

And picking up Danny Graves would leave them in the same situation

He has closed in the past. That seems to be an important qualification a far as the Reds are concerned.

They'll probably make a starter out of him.

    Re: Rockies release Danny Graves

Danny Graves was successful in 15 of his last 17 save attempts as a REDS player before he was DFA'd on May 22, 2005. Weathers took over after Graves got DFA'd and was 15 of 19 in 2005.

In 2006 as a team the REDS had 34 saves and 21 blown saves. Weathers was 12 of 18. Guardardo was 8 of 10. Coffey was 7 of 11.

In closing... since Graves had 41 saves in 2004 the REDS have needed a real closer. I know, I know... tell ya something you don't know.

That was the beginning of the end for Mr. Graves in Cincinnati.

He never was the same after that experiment as a starter.

You know, thats the conventional wisdom, but he gave up 83 hits in just over 80 innings the year before he became a starter and had an ERA in the 4s. Sure, starting taxed his arm a little, but could some of his decline just be natural? Danny was a 6 foot right hander, which usually means a short career. Baseball is not kind to short righties. Perhaps we simply associate a natural decilne with the corresponding move to SP. Correlation does not denote causality my friends.

However, its equally as likely that starting screwed Danny good. I just want to keep other options open.

    Code:
    2001 27 CIN NL 6 5 66 0 0 0 54 32 80.3 83 41 37 7 18 49 4 2 337 6 1 4.15 4.32 104 1.257
That was the year before he went into spot starting/closing.

    4.15 era.
42 walks to 53 strike outs.
80.3 innings pitched with 83 hits.

My closer can not give up more hits per innings and walk a ton...recipe for disaster.
That was my previous agruement to that same train of thought.

Graves sucked before he was a starter. Problem is, everyone blames extra work load on his arm and not the fact that he flat out blew.

He gave up too many hits and his abnormal years

    Code:
     1998 24 CIN NL 2 1 62 0 0 0 35 8 81.3 76 31 30 6 28 44 2 4 340 4 0 3.32 4.32 130 1.279

    1999 25 CIN NL 8 7 75 0 0 0 56 27 111.0 90 42 38 10 49 69 2 3 454 4 0 3.08 4.52 147 1.252

    2000 26 CIN NL 10 5 66 0 0 0 57 30 91.3 81 31 26 8 42 53 3 3 388 7 1 2.56 4.92 192 1.347 AS

He was still giving up crazy amounts of hits for a closer. He gave up 247 hits in 283.6 innings. 119 walks to 166 strike outs. Even in his "abnormally good" years he sucked as a pitcher.

    Code:
    H9 HR9 BB9 K9 WHIP
    8.41 0.66 3.10 4.87 1.28
    7.30 0.81 3.97 5.59 1.25
    7.98 0.79 4.14 5.22 1.35

True, he did suck before he became a starter; your numbers show that (to anyone who will look at them).

And then he was even worse as a starter (big surprise there, eh?) and then he was the one, after the fact, who blamed it on his becoming a starter.

But Danny didn't mind signing the 3 year contract for starter $, did he? You can't have it both ways. You get paid to pitch, and the bottom line is that Danny Graves couldn't do it, either as a starter or as a reliever.

He never could just come out and say he wasn't very good; he just wanted to blame someone else.

At least Majewski had enough guts to tell Krivsky this spring to go ahead and start him out in AAA:
"I told (general manager Wayne Krivsky) when I got here that there's no need to keep me up here if I'm getting my butt kicked like last year."
    sorry we're boring
