    Sad Weekend Numbers:

1)The Reds posted an OPS for the three games series in Chicago of .390. This consisted of an OBP of .227 and a SLG of .163.

2)The Reds had exactly one extra base hit. (double by Junior on Friday)

3)The Reds had 14 hits in 27 innings.

4)The Reds struck out 32 times in 27 innings.

5)Take away the 5th inning of Friday's game and the Reds had an OPS of .284
This consisted of an OBP of .177 and a SLG of .107.

6)Take away the 5th inning of Friday's game and the Reds had roughly one single every 3 innings. (9 singles in 26 innings)

And still they took 2 out of 3.

    Why not mention the pitching?

It was as great as the hitting was bad.

The offensive numbers were posted because someone asked about them in the Game Thread.

    Where's Cyclone?

I need this weekend splits against the Cubs.

It has to be a team record low for taking 2 out of 3.

You mean good pitching can be more important than good hitting? Imagine that. In Cincinnati?

The Reds are 4th in the MAJORS in ERA. 4TH IN THE MAJORS!

We are last in the NL in hitting. (average) LAST!!! (number 28 in Majors)

I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit.

When was the last time the Reds were 4th in ERA this late in the season?

    Re: Sad Weekend Numbers:

I may be a philistine for asking this, but: isn't this Statistical Anomaly kind of the Poster Child case for the "regressing to the norm," or whatever Stat Wankers call it?

Our offense, by all objective means, sucks donkey gonads, and yet we're still 7-5 and in first place. Just imagine what'll happen when Phillips gets back to OB%'ing at .320, or Junior manages a week straight of SLG'ing at .410! We'll be UNSTOPPABLE~!

Well, provided Loshe is good for 8 IP of 1R/12K baseball every fifth day, anyway.

Snarkiness aside: the observations about this weekend's anomalous numbers (accumulated while WINNING a series) are, to me, pretty much a counterpoint to the Arizona series, where it felt like we dominated fairly well, and yet, we lost 2 of 3. That's why I freaking love baseball: it can be flukey like that, but somehow, everything usually seems to even out in the end. It's just in this case, the "evening out" happened in the course of a week. Seriously: in my Colbert-esque "gut," my instinct is that we probably should have swept the D-Bags the way that series played out, and by the same token, the Cubs could easily have swept us back the way things went the last few days.

Bring on a week of 13-8 games to "regress" our offensive line to the norm, says I!!!!!! Lord knows, that's the only way we'll win a Milton-started game, anyway.....

Good call Spaeth. Knowing that, when was the last time the only player to hit a home run in a 3 game series was a pitcher? Also has anybody figured out our magic number yet?
We'll win it all next year...

    At Wrigley, no less.

Edit - yikes! just saw the mention of Zambrano, but the subsequent poster aptly notes the rarity of only a pitcher getting one homer.
