102-Year-Old Chico Woman Becomes Golf Ace
(CBS) CHICO, CA
You've heard the saying better late than never. A Chico woman set a new record even Tiger Woods may never break. Elsie McClean hit a hole-in-one at age 102.
If you live long enough, you'll see and perhaps accomplish just about anything. Elsie McClean is 102 years old. She's played golf since she was in her twenties and never had she hit a hole in one.
"Well, everybody wants a hole in one, and I'd say, 'why can't I have a hole in one?' I came within two inches once," said McClean.
Good things come to those who wait because on Thursday morning, Elsie became an 'Ace' player in the process, breaking the world record for the oldest person to hit a hole in one. The record-setting shot happened at the Bidwell park golf course. A 96-yard par three, Elsie pulled out her driver, and because of the slope of the green Elsie and her playing partners didn't realize she'd hit an ace until they reached the green.
"We looked. We thought, where did Elsie's end up? And we were looking all around, and Elizabeth walked by the cup, and she said, 'There she is, right here in the cup!' I said, 'oh, my lord. It can't be true. It can't be true'. I was so excited. The girls were absolutely overcome. So was I," said McClean.
Fame is nothing new for Elsie. She's been featured in national golf magazines, and was invited to appear on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno. An offer she declined.
"Oh, I don't want to go on there. I don't like publicity," said McClean.
But with her record-setting shot, Elsie may have to get used to it.
