    Cubs Release Matt Harrington

Sad End to the Matt Harrington Saga - talk about your all time draft busts

Another detour in the life of pitcher Matt Harrington, the Rockies' first-round draft choice in 2000 who turned down $3.7 million as a signing bonus out of high school:

After spending the past six years bouncing around independent leagues, failing to work out a deal with a major league team, pitching again in independent leagues, reaching a settlement with his original agent, then getting a minor league invitation to spring training with the Cubs this year, Harrington was released last week by Chicago.

Wow. And I have felt bad for people declining a $300,000 deal on Deal or No Deal then winning $5,000. I feel bad for whoever told him not to take it, unless it was his agent.

Harrington got screwed by his original agent(Tanzer) who was trying to break into representing draftees. The negotiation eventually became personal between Tanzer and O'Dowd and the kid got caught in the middle.

Truly a sad story, for whatever reason he could never regain the velocity he showed as a high schooler.
