If I can be serious for a moment - my advice to you is to not listen to anyone. The best thing you can do for a girl is something she wants. You know her better than any of us, so think of something that she enjoys and do that.
Its not about the money you spend, its about how you make her feel - show her you care by thinking about her, and it will all be good.
