    The biggest name in baseball

    There's a new all-time leader:

    Jarrod Saltalamacchia

    From the AP:

Atlanta called up top prospect Jarrod Saltalamacchia from Double-A and put him right in the lineup for his major league debut. As soon as the game became official, ``Salty'' claimed the distinction of having the longest last name in baseball history 14 letters, for those counting.

Can you imagine if this guy had played for the Reds in their pullover jersey days, when the letters on the backs were HUGE?

Do they start and end his name on the front of the uniform?

    Pffft...that's nothing.

I'm working with someone named Lakshminarayanan right now. And that's just his first name.
What if this wasn't a rhetorical question?

    Honest-to-God true tale:

I once worked for a law firm that did immigration law, and we had a client whose name was (get ready) Yogish Bevinahallyshivapasappa.

    Swear to God.

The story behind it was, his middle name was "Bevinahally" and his last name was "Shivapasappa". However, an INS processing error resulted in the combining of his two names on his passport and official entry papers. The process of getting the name corrected was so arduous that Yogish simply decided to keep the name as it was and give himself a conversation topic at the bar.

It was hell anytime we had to send a letter to him though, let me tell you.
We'll burn that bridge when we get to it.

By the way, this photo illustrates what I'm talking about...

Check out Concepcion's name, and it has only ten letters. This guy's name has fourteen! It would not have fit!

I always loved this picture, because it showed that familiar batting order. The only problem was that Geronimo was cut out.

Sure it would. It's just that it would start on his left cheek and end on his right cheek.

Man, I miss seeing stirrups on baseball players. I don't know why, but growing up, it always seemed proper. Now it's like they wear pajama pants on the field.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!
