With the emergence of Hamilton and resigning of Freel, it's hard to see where Dickerson would fit in the team's plans. He's 25 and there don't seem to be any openings this year or next. If Deno's expendable, one would think Dickerson is too. I wonder if this move is to help establish some value in him, perhaps as the PTBNL we still owe Oakland.

Not everyone has to be a starter in the majors. Dickerson may be working to take Hopper's spot someday.

Doesn't Dickerson have blazing speed? He could be used as a pinch runner.

Next year's outfielders: Freel, Griffey, Dunn, Hamilton, Conine, Hopper. Even if Dickerson can make it by Hopper, he's still #6.

I don't count Conine as an OF at this point...

Do you look for a straight platoon of Conine and Votto next year?

I don't know what the Reds' plans with Conine are, but to date, they have not stuck him out there (which is a pleasant surprise for me). Whatever happens next year, he's probably best considered at 1b at best for the team.

Conine is only under contract for 2007. I kind of doubt the Reds sign him to an extension but you never know.

Dickerson is constantly talked about as a future speedy backup-type, but dude's six-foot-four and 210+ pounds. Power's the last tool to develop, and while he strikes out a ton he also walks a lot too. What he hasn't done since the low levels is hit for a decent average.

He could seriously be a sleeper candidate to do something. I mean, on paper he's a better prospect than the Norris Hoppers of the world any day.

During the game last night he scored from first on a double and the announcers of the Bats game were saying he was easily the fastest guy on the team. The said Dewayne Wise was fast, but Dickerson was just that much faster. They were very impressed.

Could they be making room for Jay Bruce to move up?

According to John Fay who asked that question of Krivsky 'not immediately'.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Reds' brass keeps Bruce in Sarasota for what would seem to most like too long, even if he keeps ripping the cover off the ball. Playing in the FSL is a real test of a player's mettle. Its hot & humid, no crowds to speak of, no PR, etc, etc. Its really the black hole of minor league baseball. If a guy can endure that environment without either wilting or complaining it would show some character. Bruce has had it pretty easy with respect to being successful on the field and Krivsky seems like the kind of guy that is as interested in how a player does under adverse conditions as he is on seeing how good they do when things are going well. He may be looking for a way to put Bruce to the test. My guess is he'll come through with flying colors.
