My friend and I were talking the other day, and we were wondering what the ratio of balls to strikes thrown was after a pickoff attempt. It appears to me that throwing to 1st or second instead of over the plate seems to disorient some pitchers and lead to better at bats for the players at the plate. That is one of the values of having a Freel or Phillips on base with speed, getting more pitches for the guys behind them. Does anyone have data on this topic?
