Looking at some stats (small sample I know) I was intrigued by Marcos Mateo at Dayton. So far in 15.33 IP he has posted an ERA of 1.17 with an FIP of 1.05. I noticed his 10.57 K/9 coupled with his miniscule 0.59 BB/9. That is a pretty impressive 18 K/BB ratio. He has 3 saves, so I assume he's at least pitching some critical innings. These stats are quite an improvement over last year when in 45 innings he only had a 6.0 K/9 and a 4.0 BB/9. So other than him being 23, 6-1 and 200 pounds from the Dominican Republic, what's his story? Specifically:
1. What does he throw?
2. What is his velocity?
3. Why is he in A- at 23 (last year I suspect)?
4. Is he thought of as strictly a reliever or is this just getting his feet wet while waiting for a rotation spot to open?
5. Is he considered a prospect or just wait and see roster filler?
I'm studying up for next year's pick in the break-out thread. Any info would be appreciated.
