Reds finally file grievance over majewski deal

    NATIONALS NOTEBOOK
Reds File Grievance Over Majewski Deal

    By Barry Svrluga
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Saturday, May 19, 2007; Page E05

The Cincinnati Reds have formally filed a grievance with Major League Baseball regarding last year's trade with the Washington Nationals in which the Reds believe they received damaged goods in reliever Gary Majewski.

"We're looking into the matter," league spokesman Mike Teevan said yesterday. "There's no firm deadline by which we have to reach a decision."

Sources said MLB officials have begun the process of speaking with officials from both teams regarding the July 13 deal that sent Majewski and four other players -- shortstop Royce Clayton, reliever Bill Bray, infielder Brendan Harris and minor league pitcher Daryl Thompson -- to Cincinnati for outfielder Austin Kearns, infielder Felipe Lopez and reliever Ryan Wagner.

Nationals General Manager Jim Bowden, who has maintained that the Nationals turned over all the medical records regarding Majewski that the Reds asked for, declined to comment yesterday. Through a spokesman, Cincinnati General Manager Wayne Krivsky also declined to comment.

Majewski had tendinitis in his right shoulder while with the Nationals early last season, and although he never went on the disabled list, the condition was reported in the media. He made 11 appearances with the Reds before being placed on the disabled list Aug. 8. A day later, Krivsky first brought up the possibility of seeking a league investigation.

Majewski is 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA for Class AAA Louisville this year. The Nationals play a four-game series at Cincinnati next week.

This is nothing more than WK in a last ditch effort to save face on his own incompetences. He should of made the deal dependent on the player passing a medical evaluation/physical by Reds doctors. He failed to do that. He lost, the Reds lost, Bowden won.

If I was Wayne I would never want to speak of this trade agian and put the rule out that if any employee of the Reds ever brought up this trade they would be fired.

He should just learn from his mistake and move on because to me this if just making him look sore loser. I think he pitch 4 times in the first 6 games after the trade that doesn't sound like an injuried player to me.

However, it is accepted practice that players traded during the season do not have to pass a physical prior to the finalization of the trade. The player's former team is under a "good faith" obligation to turn over all medical records of the player in lieu of the physical. This is primarily a time-saving measure, as players dealt during the season are typically needed to come in and contribute immediately. The question is whether JimBo and the Nationals did this, or whether they "hid" the injury. Key to the question is the cortisone injection that Majewski had only a week before the trade, of which the Reds were unaware. This is the sort of info that clubs normally divulge to each other.

Had we kept Brendan Harris and made him into the 2007 version of Rich Aurilia, this would have been a better trade.

    exactly.

I have no idea if the Nats hid a shot but if they did, then they should be penalized.

In other news, arrests have been made in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln...

Didn't mind the trade but WK is a day late and a dollar short.

Waiting until now is kind of like taking a gallon of spoiled milk back to the grocery store a year after it's expiration date. Sure, it may have been spoiled when you bought it, but why did it take you this long to complain about it?

The rules say the Reds have a full year to file a grievance and I don't think any of us really know enough about what the actual facts are to make judgments about how the grievance process has and is being pursued.

The 2007 version of Aurilia should retire: .250/.295/.368 (for those inclined to believe in lineup protection, those numbers are primarily with Aurilia batting in front of Bonds).

    who knows.

but just b/c it did isn't in itself evidence that Krivsky doesn't know what he is doing as some have implied.

Wayne could have done a google search and saw he was hurt. Not only that he was the most used pitcher in baseball, even going in the World Baseball Classic.
