    So is Alex Gonzalez...

Is Alex Gonzalez the 'best defensive shortstop in baseball' the same way Narron is a 'baseball guy'?

I mean if the mantra is repeated often enough, by enough people does that make it true? It's all we heard prior to this.

I'm not trying [believe me I'm not trying] to go off on a rant, but I mean were we as fans sold a bill of goods here?

How much of this is not living up to the hype, and how much is possibly the situation with his ill child?

Championships for MY teams in my lifetime:
    Cincinnati Reds - 75, 76, 90
    Chicago Blackhawks - 10, 13
    University of Kentucky - 78, 96, 98, 12
    Cincinnati Bengals - None
    Chicago Bulls - 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98

He has 2 errors tonight and should probably have 3.

Almost to a man among MLB players and coaches, he's the best defensive shortstop many of them of seen.

He's not performed well....there's no disputing that. But I'm willing to bet he'll perform much more consistantly as the year goes on.

Then how come they never vote for him to win a Gold Glove?

Reds fans have engaged in some serious fictionalizing of his abilities.

Hey, we just go by on what we're told. We were told Gonzo was the second coming of Concepcion. Of course we were also told that the bullpen was in good shape too and Ryan Freel can't play every day.

I really don't mean to beat this one to death again...but I have trouble ignoring it. His current OBP is lower than any season in his career and well below league avg. He can't even steal bases right now which was half his purpose to get the team "fired" up.

3-5 last night with a home run and chased down a ball at the warning track without diving. Some of the others should be so tired. I simply feel that the notion that Freel can't play every day is a canard, a myth, a falsehood and until I see evidence of that, I'm not going to believe it. As for his stolen base ability, is he losing speed or is it just that he has lousy technique? But it does look like he's going to get a leash as far as stealing goes.

Lead, first off, by the GM:

I think any winning team, it doesn't matter what the sport is, any team that wins a championship is strong defensively. Baseball is no different. We can't afford to be next-to-last in fielding percentage and give up the unearned runs we gave up last year. That puts too much stress on the pitching staff and we're not really a strikeout-dominating pitching staff. It puts more importance on defense and making the routine plays.

Well, these are the same voters who think the best defensive shortstop in the AL is Derek Jeter, so the fictionalizing is coming from many angles.

For sure, he's been in a bit of a fielding slump this year. Hope he shakes out of it.

True enough. Though I think Jeter winning a GG over Gonzalez points to Gonzalez's defensive rep inside the game not quite being as sterling as some have been led to believe. No doubt he's been a good defender and he's got a good rep, but a number of guys (including three others in the NL Central) have a similar rep.

He's not perceived as being singularly outstanding is all I was really driving at.

Jeter winning a GG just cracks me up.

Almost as much as when Palmiero won a GG with less than 50 G played at that position.

    Offensively, Jeter's a no-doubt 1st ballot HOF. Defensively, however...

His fielding pct right now is the worst that it's been since 2001.

His range looks OK, it's the balls that he should get that he's goofing up.

I like AGon.. I really do but like I said in another thread.

AGon couldn't hold a candle to Davey Concepcion.
