    So is Alex Gonzalez...

Is Alex Gonzalez the 'best defensive shortstop in baseball' the same way Narron is a 'baseball guy'?

I mean if the mantra is repeated often enough, by enough people does that make it true? It's all we heard prior to this.

I'm not trying [believe me I'm not trying] to go off on a rant, but I mean were we as fans sold a bill of goods here?

How much of this is not living up to the hype, and how much is possibly the situation with his ill child?

Championships for MY teams in my lifetime:
    Cincinnati Reds - 75, 76, 90
    Chicago Blackhawks - 10, 13
    University of Kentucky - 78, 96, 98, 12
    Cincinnati Bengals - None
    Chicago Bulls - 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98

He has 2 errors tonight and should probably have 3.

Almost to a man among MLB players and coaches, he's the best defensive shortstop many of them of seen.

He's not performed well....there's no disputing that. But I'm willing to bet he'll perform much more consistantly as the year goes on.

His fielding pct right now is the worst that it's been since 2001.

His range looks OK, it's the balls that he should get that he's goofing up.

I like AGon.. I really do but like I said in another thread.

AGon couldn't hold a candle to Davey Concepcion.

I would not underestimate the effect his family situation has on his play so far this season.

It is also very possible that Gonzo could go the rest of the season without making another error. Wasn't it in 2000 that Omar Vizquel made three errors in one game at the begining of the season, then was perfect the rest of the season?

He is what he has mostly always been, a slightly above average defensive SS. Not a GG caliber SS as some have tried to sell him.

Hmmm. Kind of like the bull we were given on Royce Clayton being an All-Star caliber shortstop and Deno replacing Kearns, right?

Nah, I wouldn't go anywhere near that far. The Reds were reaching into a tattered and wet paper bag by trying to convince people that Royce Clayton had any value, and most keen observers knew that right away.

The thing with Alex Gonzalez is that he actually was a good defensive shortstop ... all the way up through last season. The problem with Alex Gonzalez is so far through May 23rd of 2007, he hasn't been a good defensive shortstop for the Reds. The Alex Gonzalez of pre-2007 and the Alex Gonzalez of so far through 2007 have been two totally different players defensively.

Basic zone rating is far from the best defensive tool, but it's probably the best defensive tool easily accessible that's available midseason (Dial may post some rankings in early July around the ASB). Here's Gonzalez's zone ratings defensively for the past few years compared to his 2007 zone rating ...

    2001: .850
    2002: .868
    2003: .861
    2004: .862
    2005: .846
    2006: .863

    2001-2006 rough average: .858

    2007: .827

An .858 zone rating, which is around Gonzalez's six year average through 2006, is above average to good and oftentimes places a shortstop in the top 10 for the majors. If Gonzalez was performing to those 2001-2006 standards of defensive prowess, then most people would be satisfied with his defense and that contract would be tolerable ... not preferred, but something that myself and most others could live with. The problem is Gonzalez hasn't been performing to his previous standards of defensive prowess, and so far he's cost the team a couple runs. If he can't rebound back up to his 2001-2006 levels then that contract handed out to him goes from being tolerable to being awful.

I think he has been having an awful year in the field so far. I was telling a co-worker of mine this week that AGonz is a defensive miscue machine. He was shocked. But he really has been very mistake pron early. Maybe my expectations were too high. He is very fancy and smooth, and makes some decent plays. I think the "fanciness" makes some think he is better than he is.

Cyclone, do you think this speaks towards injury? Luck? Turning 30?

I wonder how much being on a team that is falling appart is effecting him psycologically? People usually rise to the level they are surrounded by. He was on a couple of teams that were winning games and going places. Now he's on the Bad News Bears. Wonder if that's some part of the equation?

I simply don't have access to a "cares about RBI" place in my psyche. There is a "mildly curious about OBI%" alcove just before the acid filled lake guarded by robot snipers with lasers which leads to the "cares about RBI" antechamber though. - Nate

Then how come they never vote for him to win a Gold Glove?

Reds fans have engaged in some serious fictionalizing of his abilities.

Hey, we just go by on what we're told. We were told Gonzo was the second coming of Concepcion. Of course we were also told that the bullpen was in good shape too and Ryan Freel can't play every day.

I really don't mean to beat this one to death again...but I have trouble ignoring it. His current OBP is lower than any season in his career and well below league avg. He can't even steal bases right now which was half his purpose to get the team "fired" up.
