Joe Rogan's hilarious and a great representative of the sport.
Personally, I'm a fan of both, but I thought it was interesting to see this debate on SportsCenter.
The guy defending the side of boxing seemed to be really closeminded and was made a fool of.

I don't think either guy was very effective at proving his point. Rogan spent too much time mocking Dibella rather than countering his 'human cockfighting' BS with clear and concise points.
I wish he would have pointed out WHY certain boxing techniques don't work in MMA rather than getting into a debate about his personal feelings about boxing. You can talk all you want about defense in the sweet science, but it is one hell of a lot easier to defend against two-point strikes (fists only) than it is to defend against eight-point strikes (fists, elbows, knees, shins) AND takedown attempts.
I also wish he would have just conceded the fact boxers have better hands than MMA guys. Boxers spend 100% of their time working on techniques to improve their effectiveness with their hands, while MMA guys have to spend time working on knee/elbow/shin strikes as well as wrestling and submission offense and defense. Boxers DO have better hands ... but MMA fighters are better at everything else, and they are experts at dictating where a fight takes place. Great hands won't save you if can't defend against a guy shooting in for an ankle pick from outside your punching range.

Rogan got the better of it for sure, but he spent too much time defending himself from the charge that he didn't understand or respect boxing for the science it is. He could have made more points about MMA, but I overall I think he did a good job on a wide sports platform for MMA.
I'm a huge MMA fan but hate Rogan. I also wish they spent more time actually explaining the real differences in the sport such as stances for starters. As for MMA vs boxing I see it quite simple: With MMA rules a boxer would have no chance and in Boxing rules a boxer would dominate.
Boxing is pretty much gone here in the states because its horribly marketed. Like Rogan said there are no more big names. I even come from a huge boxing family and can only name a few active boxers. UFC does a great job at promoting their sport through their reality show and their Friday Night Fights. Fans are a lot more likely to dish out the cash for a PPV if they feel a connection with the fighters.

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson tore Chuck Liddell up over three years ago in a PRIDE bout, and tonight Rampage knocked Liddell out in under two minutes. I've been waiting a few years for Liddell to get knocked out again, and just like the first time, Rampage stepped up and got it done.
Also, FWIW, UFC lightweight Din Thomas called out boxers Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Kermit Cintron offering to fight either one of them at any time. Thomas called them out after applying a slick armbar to Jeremy Stephens, and fortunately for Stephens Thomas didn't crank it too hard because Thomas could have snapped Stephens' arm quite easily.

Now we get to see Jackson defend the title against Dan Henderson. Rampage has proven to have Chuck's number, but he has also proven to be vulnerable to the elite Pride 205 pounders.

I'm not a fan of either really. I will watch boxing in the olympics but that's pretty much it. My opinion though, for what it's worth, is it's kind of like comparing apples and oranges. Sure, both are fighting sports, but that's pretty much where the similarities end. We might as well try to compare Formula 1 and NHRA because they both involve fast cars. They're different sports and the athletes who are good at one would probably not fare as well in the other.
^^ So true. In a straight boxing match a boxer would crush an MMA fighter. In an MMA fight the MMA fighter would crush a boxer. Personally I just don't see the appeal of MMA. I haven't seen much of it, but anytime I do see it it's mostly clutching and grabbing. Every time I've seen it it's been pretty dull.
I think a lot of people try to normalize the two in terms of what would be more useful for self defense or a street fight. Boxers win under boxing matches, MMA dudes win MMA matches.
In a self defense situation, its up to the individual rather than the discipline that will determine the winner which is kind of ironic when you think about it. The UFC was started as a kind of "which discipline is better" tournament and now everyone cross trains in striking, grappling and submission.
That is because every time one discipline started to look like the answer, someone changed the question.
First it was BJJ with Royce Gracie. Just when everyone thought BJJ was unbeatable, one-dimensional wrestlers like Dan Severn, Mark Coleman, and Mark Kerr emerged and started destroying people with ground & pound. Then strikers who could sprawl like Pedro Rizzo, Vitor Belfort & Maurice Smith started recording brutal knockouts of the one-dimensional wrestlers. Then wrestlers like Matt Hughes, Tito Ortiz & Randy Couture learned enough striking to set up their takedowns and enough BJJ to avoid submissions and started to dominate. Finally, after it became clear that no one discipline could succeed by itself, everyone started to cross-training and the modern MMA athlete was born.
Sure, there is clinching every now and again, but no MMA fight can POSSIBLY be duller than the Jermain Taylor-Cory Spinks fight, for instance, right?
