The fights in that game were hilarious as well.

Nothing beat Baseball Stars or RBI, but Bases Loaded was so hilariously strange (and the first game to keep stats, I think) that it got heavy rotation.

On a side note, that screen shot is taken exactly where my seats were at Fenway. That things looks about as real as it gets.

Re: The Unofficial Video Game System Thread

Okay... first of all, I hope that you and your families all had a wonderful Christmas. I normally would not even be near RZ today, but I think that I have found myself in the midst of a PS3 crisis.

In September 2007, we paid $499 for the (newly discountinued) 60GB model as they were rapidly disappearing from the store shelves. It has been a great system and I was so happy that we got the 60GB model of the PS3 due to the many, many PS2 games that we were able to play seamlessly on the new system.

Just yesterday, my son casually informs me that, "uhm, Dad? I think the Playstation is broken...Well, see ya." Sure enough, I check on it and it seems to have officially qualified itself for a Viking funeral.

It still powers up just fine. Except, after just 2-3 seconds, you hear some parts turning on the inside, the screen flickers--and then goes completely blank. Regardless of whether a disk is inserted, we cannot even see the PS menu screen. The controllers do not seem to be able to pull the system out of hibernation mode, either. It simply does nothing at all.

I changed the A/V cables to see if that was the problem. Nope, same thing. I did a 'system reset' by holding the 'On' button down for > 5 seconds. It simply flashed the standby light a few times and then goes back to a steady glow. It seems to be as dead as a hammer.

My questions are: Has anyone ever experienced something like this with their PS3 (regardless of whether or not it was the 60GB model? Is there any point in sending it off for repairs?

I was fortunate enough to have taken out the 3-year in store warranty from Target (for $39.99). I believe that amounts to bringing the system into the store and getting a new one off the shelves, but I cannot confirm the process until the day after Christmas.

If the above scenario IS the process, I guess that I will be S.O.L. with regards to getting another version of the 60GB PS3 model. That would be too bad, as I have always heard that this model had the superior software emulation and is still the most desired system.

Does anyone have a recommendation on how I should proceed? As of this day and age, which of the currently offered PS3 models would be the most desireable one to call my own?

Any advice that could be offered would be greatly appreciated!

That sucks, Blimpie. Unfortunately, I don't believe that any of the replacement models available at most stores offer backward compatibility with PS2 games. The only exception would be the 80GB Metal Gear Solid combo pack that was issued a while back, but that's near impossible to find as well. However, I would think that some Target store somewhere has one so you might do well to speak with a manager at your local Target to see if one can be located should you use your warranty. That's the most desirable model of those produced after the 60GB unit.

Should you not be able to locate that model as a replacement, you can probably ship your PS3 back to Sony for repair. However, if it's out of warranty, I believe the repair cost (if it can be fixed) is around $150.00. For that, you can just get a model without backward compatibility as a replacement and then buy a PS2 and come out ahead.

If you do go for the replacement model in-store, make sure they don't try to pull a swap for an 80GB unit. Considering that you paid $500 for yours, the least I'd accept would be the 160GB unit that comes with "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune".

Check with Sony first to determine your options and move from there.

I knew I could count on you for some sage-like wisdom on this one. Given that it is Christmas and all, I thought I might have to put out one of these in order to get you to ring in on the matter:

Thanks for the advice...I will give Sony HQ a call tomorrow (providing they are keeping normal office hours).

No problem, Blimpie. Even during Christmas day I take periodic breaks between watching Blu-Ray flicks and playing new games. I haven't even started Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II (seriously, a gift from my mother) or finished Heroes Season 2. The Dark Knight was a popular gift. I got one normal BD copy and two Limited Editions (with the bike). I'll keep one of the latter sealed just because it's cool and flip the other for Persona 4.

Good luck with the PS3 and I think you'll make out alright. Just be firm with the customer service folks you speak with.

I just got my new XBox up and running. It's great. It has frozen a couple of times on me, with a new game, so I'm a bit concerned about that. I'm curious about something, can I save the game to the hard drive of my system? I got the 60 gig, so I've got plenty of room. I just usually end up scratching them.
If you can't build a winning team with that core a fire-sale isn't the solution. Selling the franchise, moving them to Nashville and converting GABP into a used car lot is.

    Another update:
I just broke that disk. It was in the machine, and all the sudden, it started sounding like a screeching noise. I opened the machine, and there are about 10 rings scraped into the disk.

How did you manage to do that? It's a brand new system, right?

Dude, I hate it that this just happened to you. Unfortunately, your problem has become pretty prevalent with the X-Box 360 system. It is not quite the "Red Ring of Death" problem in terms of devastation, but it is something that you are hearing more and more about.

Apparently, some guy is trying to launch a class action lawsuit against Microsoft. During the discovery process (or maybe through the Freedom of Information Act), he was able to acquire several internal Microsoft memos. A few of them suggested prior knowledge of this design flaw on the 360.

Get ready to be a little sick.... One of the proposed fixes for the problem amounted to having the factory add a $0.50 rubber washer into the system to prevent the discs from rubbing or becoming dislodged (mostly from repositioning the system while a disc was still spinning). Allegedly, Microsoft decided against adding the piece and is now reaping the rewards.
