2006 Draft and follows so far.

14 414 Carson Kainer of Texas TX (Signed after not attending class because of Kidney Transplant)
16 474 Jamie Arneson lhp Bakersfield (Calif.) CC CA (Signed)
19 564 Derrik Lutz rhp George Washington DC (Signed)

47 1398 CIN Frueny Parra c Connors State (Okla.) JC OK
48 1426 CIN Jordan Shadle ss Green River (Wash. ) CC WA
It's good that Two of the High school players decided to become draft and follows. Lutz will be a Summer time draft and follow pitching in the Cape Cod summer league. The Reds will follow his progress and hopefully sign him before the next school year starts. Arneson will also be going to the Cape Cod league as a summer time draft and follow. The Reds will follow his progress and hopefully sign him before the next school year starts. It looks like Tiegs and Parra are draft and follow eligible if they do not sign.

    Update. Arneson signs.

The Cincinnati Reds drafted Ben Ihde, a first baseman/pitcher on the Neenah prep baseball team for the past four seasons, in the 34th round last week.

Ihde, who made the Fox Valley Association's all-conference second team, signed a "watch and follow" agreement with the Reds. Ihde will attend Wabash Junior College in Mt. Carmel, Ill., for a year and compete in baseball. Meanwhile, no other professional team can negotiate a deal with him during that time.

If Ihde has a productive season at Wabash, it's likely he'll sign a deal with the Reds to report to their rookie instructional league in Sarasota, Fla.

Yw Cincy09. This is important like our signed draft picks. This way we can keep track of who we still have a chance to sign. It should be interesting to see how they do next year.

    Curry Chooses Baseball
    By: Andy Britt
    Inside Carolina
    Date: Jun 13, 2006

North Carolina 2007 football commitment Justin Curry notified the UNC coaching staff on Monday night that he has officially decided to pursue a baseball career, Buford (Ga.) baseball coach Tony Wolfe told Inside Carolina.

Drafted in the 33rd round of the Major League Draft by the Cincinnati Reds last week, Curry was not signed right away. Instead, he has enrolled at Young Harris Junior College (Ga.) and will play baseball there while continuing to be evaluated by the Reds.
“He’s signed a baseball scholarship to go to Young Harris Junior College,” Wolfe said. “Evidently, the Reds told him he was a draft and follow guy. They wanted him to play a year of junior college before they were going to sign him."

Per NCAA rules, Curry will be eligible for a Major League contract at any time, as opposed to if he were to go to a Division I school where he would have to spend three years before exercising his professional opportunity.

Curry committed as a "greyshirt" to the Tar Heel football program this past February, meaning his scholarship at UNC would become effective in January instead of the previous August. His father, Buddy, was an all-conference linebacker at North Carolina and played professionally with the Atlanta Falcons.

“He’s a unique athlete," Wolfe said of Justin. "He’s obviously has the physical package at 6-foot-3, 225 pounds. He’s clocked pretty consistently as a pitcher between 88-92 mph. But what makes him special is he’s a pitcher in baseball with the mentality of a linebacker in football. He’s competitive.”

On the diamond, Curry had an 8-1 record as a senior, with a 1.98 ERA and 65 strikeouts. On the gridiron, Curry recorded 100 tackles – 12 for loss, 16 sacks and over 20 quarterback hurries for the 12-1 Wolves – four-time defending Region 8AA Champions.

“It was a tough decision and only time will tell if it was the right decision. ... I think the draft made up the final decision in his mind. He loves both sports, but I think the draft convinced him he had a little more immediate future in baseball."

According to Wolfe, North Carolina head coach John Bunting has left the door open for Curry, who turns 18 this month, to come to UNC down the road if his baseball career doesn't pan out.

“He has a standing offer from Young Harris for pretty much the entire season, if he decided to opt out of football and pursue a baseball career," Wolfe said. "Coach Bunting told the family that if baseball doesn't workout, there is still probably going to be an opportunity to come up to UNC.

"If the Reds don't sign him after a year, I wouldn't be surprised if he turned back to football."

    AMATEUR DRAFT
Cincinnati picks former Lower Dauphin ace Lutz
    Thursday, June 08, 2006
    BY ERIC F. EPLER
    For The Patriot-News
His rather quiet Tuesday afternoon aside, Derrik Lutz found relief on day two of Major League Baseball's amateur draft. The former Lower Dauphin ace and George Washington University's top right-hander was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 19th-round yesterday, 564th overall.

"It was nerve-racking because of the excitement and possibility [of being drafted earlier]," said Lutz, who battled tendinitis late this season. "Maybe some teams were scared away because they thought I was injured? But it's probably better this way. Now that's it's done, the options are there. The Red are going to follow me this summer and going back to school is an option."

Lutz, a three-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference pick, earned a closer's role during his freshman campaign and quickly set GW's single-single mark in saves (12). That nugget earned the 6-foot, 205-pound hurler a spot on the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team.

In 2005, the hard-thrower moved to the Colonials' starting rotation and posted an impressive 8-1 mark before heading to Chatham (Mass.) and the prestigious Cape Cod Summer League.

Interest grew as Lutz, in 25 innings, allowed no runs and struck out 39 with 12 saves. This spring, Lutz went 6-4 with a team-leading 1.54 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 992/3 innings.

The Reds will follow Lutz' progress in Chatham, where he'll pitch from the bullpen.

"Teams were not likely to use a 10th or even 11th-round pick on someone that could possibly be injured," said Lutz. "They want to be sure and once I get [to Chatham] in the summer, I'll be able to prove to the Reds that I'm definitely 100 percent."

Another Mid-Penn product, third-baseman Jared Olson, was plucked in the 27th round yesterday by the Texas Rangers. One year removed from Chambersburg High School, Olson led Frederick Community College to a 34-19 record this season, batting .432 with nine home runs and 58 runs batted in.

The 6-3, 200-pound Olson, who tagged 23 doubles, was an NJCAA Division II All-America selection.

Line Mountain graduate Kelly Sweppenhiser, who worked out in Toronto on May 31, was selected by the Blue Jays in the 44th round. The Herndon native capped a sensational four-year career at Virginia Military Institute by earning All-Big South Conference first-team honors for the second consecutive season.

The tough-minded third baseman led VMI to its first 30-win season and owns several VMI career totals, including hits (263), runs (172), total bases (411) and on-base percentage (.457). He hit .350 with seven home runs and 41 RBIs this season, VMI's first winning campaign in 41 years.

Re: 2006 Draft and follows so far.

    http://reds.mostvaluablenetwork.com/...draft-roundup/
    16. Jamie Arneson, LHP, Bakersfield (Calif.) CC
    6′5″/195#, L/L, Age 20

“Struck out 102 batters in 81 innings this season.”

“For Arneson, his 16th-round selection came as a disappointment considering his high expectations entering the draft. The lefty, who helped the Renegades to their first outright conference title since 1976, was chosen in the 9th round out of high school and Arneson had hoped to improve on that.

The 6-foot-5 prospect may have scared off interested teams, though, after switching agents the night before the draft.

“I knew it would be a bit of an issue,” he said, “but I didn’t know it would be this big.”

But Arneson still has college eligibility remaining and a scholarship to play for Mike Martin at Florida State if he so chooses. This summer will be spent pondering options and trying to convince the Reds he’s worthy of more money than the average 16th-round pick.

“I’m probably going to play in the Cape Cod league and just show them what I can do and see what they say then,” Arneson said.”

Milton Loo was one last year. Draft and Follows are players that are drafted and who do not attend a 4 year College. The players are allowed to play in Cape Cod league or Junior college. The drafting team still has their rights until 1 week before the draft or a 48 hour window to negotiate if player was still playing.

Re: 2006 Draft and follows so far.

    Reds44,

Draft and follows are players who are not signed to a regular contract to play ball for the teams that drafted them, however sign a contract that states they cannot negotiate with any other team and the team that drafted them maintain his rights for the entire year until the 07 draft (i.e. Milton Loo). They play for a year and are "watched" or followed on their progress and if the team that drafted them likes the progress and play of the player, they attempt to sign them. This is a "soft contract", if you will.
