    Smoking Ban: First Weekend Reactions

I was down in Cincy for the weekend, and had a blast downtown. It seemed that everyone inside was enjoying the ban, and the few smokers I did see outside were in good spirits. I realize it is not entirely convenient for many, but I think it is for the better for everyone.

    Thoughts? Reactions?

(Please don't turn this into a "right to smoke" debate.)

Re: Smoking Ban: First Weekend Reactions

We go out to dinner usually once per weekend. About the only improvement I've noticed is that we we only say, "table for X please" instead of "table for X please, non-smoking".

Serriously, not trying to be a jerk, but that's the only thing I've noticed. Before people jump on me with "but your clothes dont' stink" I don't count that as much of an improvement considering that we wash our clothes after each use anyway. Our clothes smell like smoke...they go in the hamper. Our clothes have just been worn for the day...they go in the hamper. No real difference IMO.

I would be currious if having all non-smoking has improved the wait times at resturants at all? We usually go out at off times or early so I couldn't really comment.

Smokers will start to grouse in the winter. They couldn't have picked a better time to begin the ban.

    You're a family man, Lt?

The difference is bigger and more marked when you go out to clubs and ESPECIALLY bars.

Plus if you go out at 7 p.m. and your clothes smell like smoke, they're going to smell for the rest of the night. That's no fun.

Try going to a club that is non-smoking vs one that is, it's a world of difference, especially here where your clothes often include a coat and hat to ward off the rain, do you wash your winter coat every time you go to a smoking establishment? When I do I hang mine outside on the porch overnight to get the smell out, myself I have to take a shower to get the smell off.

    As for dinner?

I can't say I've eaten at a smoking establishment in a few years so I wouldn't know, but bars are a different story.

My wife and I went to Red Lobster the other evening during a busy time and had a table within about five minutes. Before it used to take a bit longer with a similar crowd. The whole supply and demand thing with the non smoking tables. Other than that, I can't say that I notice any difference at all because I always sat in non smoking anyway. My wife had noticed more than me because she's more sensitive to smoke than I am. (too many years playing in a band) She used to ask for a different table if we were too close to the smoking section and she could smell it.

Yea, I haven't been a club or bar for years so you are right, my impression is likely tilted because I'm only out at resturants, and as I said, usually at off times or early.

Are you even old enough to get into a club/bar?

In the winter time when we go to our parents house, who smoke, I just wear an old coat that I have laying around for just such a purpose. Then my nice coats don't get smoky and the older coat can just hang in the garage till it airs out.

    I absolutely love the ban.

Most decent bars and clubs have patios, so it's not like the smokers have to stand in the street. And thanks to the open air, I don't mind standing outside with them from time to time. When we're inside, it's like the air is clearer, the drinks are colder, and the jukebox is always playing Squeeze.
    Makes all the routine posts.

Well then I guess you've got the answer, everyone needs more coats.

You hook it up behind the car

Welllll... some fans were getting their smokes in at GABP yesterday afternoon... 3 lit up right in front of security and were told very politely to put it out. Then a little old lady snuck a smoke around the 6th inning. All this was going on at Redlegs Landing (there was no party group there). Either people were totally clueless or just pretended to be innocent of the ban. One even said "I wondered why there wasn't any ashtrays"...
