Reds' OPS Against RHP And Southpaws

Considering how bad the Reds have fared against left-handed pitching, here is alook at the best dozen OPS Reds: overall, against RHP, and maybe most importantly, against LHP:

---------- OPS Overall OPS vs RHP OPS vs LHP

    Ken Griffey Jr. 0.905 0.896 0.918
    Adam Dunn 0.883 0.952 0.769
    Josh Hamilton 0.857 0.934 0.646
    Alex Gonzalez 0.837 0.903 0.707
    Scott Hatteberg 0.834 0.817 0.975
    Brandon Phillips 0.809 0.761 0.901
    Norris Hopper 0.770 0.617 0.968
    Jeff Conine 0.747 0.702 0.772
    Edwin Encarnacion 0.723 0.732 0.706
    Javier Valentin 0.721 0.638 1.405
    Ryan Freel 0.676 0.815 0.471
    David Ross 0.609 0.573 0.661

    Perhaps significantly,

    (A) Freel and Ross fail to make the top 10 overall,
    (B) Phillips, Hopper, Conine, Valentin, and Ross do better against southpaws than they do against RHP, and
    (C) Dunn, Hamilton, Gonzalez, Encarnacion, and Freel do better against RHP than they do against southpaws.

Therefore, those who should get the most AB against RHP (discounting Freel, on the DL), in descending order:

    Adam Dunn
    Josh Hamilton
    Alex Gonzalez
    Ken Griffey Jr.
    Scott Hatteberg
    Brandon Phillips
    Edwin Encarnacion
    Javier Valentin

And those who should get the most AB against southpaws (discounting Conine because the other first baseman ranks so high -- perhaps due to small sample) in descending order:

    Javier Valentin
    Scott Hatteberg
    Norris Hopper
    Ken Griffey Jr.
    Brandon Phillips
    Adam Dunn
    Alex Gonzalez
    Edwin Encarnacion

Admittedly, the Reds' worst defensive catcher makes both lineups. But at least Javy would not be the automatic out in the #8 hole that Ross most frequently is. Turn the lineup over, and all that. More opportunities for the top of the order, etc..

Hopper's been that RH power bat that the team has needed.

Perhaps not, but Hopper's 0.968 OPS vs LHP ranks him higher against southpaws than Griffey, Phillips, Dunn, Gonzalez, Encarnacion, Hamilton, and Freel.
