2004 #1 Draft Pick, Matt Bush, to Convert to Pitching

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports...1mattbush.html

The Padres have decided to turn Matt Bush into a pitcher, nearly three years since they drafted him first overall as a shortstop.

“I just think now is the time,” said Padres vice president of scouting and development Grady Fuson, who made the decision.

Fuson said Bush, 21, is “ecstatic” to return to the mound, where he last performed in 2004 for Mission Bay High.

In his high school career, Bush went 9-1 with a 0.42 ERA, striking out 91 in 66 innings. His fastball regularly topped 90 miles per hour.

“He had a big arm,” said scouting director Bill Gayton.

Bush was having his fourth below-average season at shortstop, batting .204 with 13 errors in 26 games with Single-A Lake Elsinore.

Fuson said that Bush will begin working with pitching coach Steve Webber this week and probably will pitch for the Peoria Padres in the rookie-level Arizona Summer League.

Well, you have to give them credit for finding a useful transition for the kid. If you can take a .204 hitter and transform him into a pitcher with these credentials, you have to tip your hat to the guys. Those numbers look like Lincecum's at that level. Just taking him out of the line-up gave them a boost.

Yet another example of why you don't worry about signability and instead you take the best player.

Championships for MY teams in my lifetime:
    Cincinnati Reds - 75, 76, 90
    Chicago Blackhawks - 10, 13, 15
    University of Kentucky - 78, 96, 98, 12
    Chicago Bulls - 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98

Yeah, it was always a little weird to see Bush in the box.

    Trevor Hoffman v 2.0?
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

With the position change isn't he mandated to follow Coutlangus, Aasadorian, and McBeth and join the Reds?

I could definitely see Bush and Coutlangus going together.

Bush has been decently successful to this point in very limited action as a pitcher in the rookie league.

    5.1 innings, 4 hits, 2 walks, 0 runs, 11 strikeouts. Not bad for a guy who isn't a pitcher.

However he was shut down with a sore shoulder. They are giving him a little time off but expect him to pitch again this summer.

    Should be interesting to follow.

I bet Dick Pole could make Bush into an excellent pitcher.
