Best show that could have been HBO-ified

HBO clearly has had some of the greatest TV shows ever (from Larry Sanders to The Sopranos and all those in between). A lot of that can be attributed to the language, the sexual content and the lesser standards HBO has.

So, what TV shows could have been ever better had they been on HBO?

Bill Simmons (the Sports Guy) went with Skin - - the Fox show of a couple of years ago with Ron Silver and Olivia Wilde, while also mentioning NYPD Blue. One of his readers suggested Lost, another The Man Show.

Personally, I think 24 would have been an even better fit for HBO. The language could have fit better, the killings, etc.

Another choice, although a recent show that died a quick death, would be The Black Donnellys. That just seems like an HBO show.

I couldn't believe you forgot the Black Donnelly's in your original post. That show is made for HBO and would have been a great answer for the fall season, sans Sopranos.

As good as it is, the new "Battlestar Galactica" would have been even better with a higher budget and more explicit language. Hearing "frak" in place of your favorite f-bomb gets a little annoying. The problem is, the show is already very steamy without being gratuitous, and if it was on HBO, you can bet it would cross that line with regularity.

"Action", the short-lived Fox series about Hollywood insiders, was "Entourage" before Donnie Walhberg decided to take the concept and run with it. It could have benefited from a more movie-savvy audience, which I think HBO or Cinemax could have provided. Plus, it really needed to be more graphic.

I think Arrested Development would work nicely on HBO, too. Lots of "bleeps" on that show, plus the whole Tobias is possibly gay thing

The first thought that came to mind when I read this was either of Denis Leary's two projects: the failed ABC show "The Job" and the much more successful FX show "Rescue Me." Though, you could really make the argument that the only thing that would change from FX to HBO would be use of the F word. Both were/are really great shows as it stands, however.

M*A*S*H is one I thought of. Think of the gory surgery room scenes they could have had not mention nurses shower scenes.

Rescue Me is also one of the first I thought of - but FX is pretty liberal at 10:00, so not too much would change. Although we'd probably gets lots of nudity, which is always good.
