    Reds complete the Denorfia trade

This just in from C. Trent's blog:

Just got a release that the Reds finished their trade with the A's for Chris Denorfia, getting left-hander Ben Jukich. Juckich, 24, pitch this season at Class A Stockton (3-4, 5.40 ERA) and will be assigned to Sarasota.

From last year's BA draft preview:

Lefthander Ben Jukich led the NAIA in strikeouts (144) and strikeouts per nine innings (13.7) while setting Dakota Wesleyan records for whiffs in a season and in a game (17). He doesn't have overpowering stuff to match those numbers, though he does maintain an 88-89 mph throughout a game. His secondary pitches are just OK.

Good call M2: The 411 on Ben Jukich. Drafted in the 13th round last year, Jukich is 24 but he’s a LH pitcher with an outstanding curveball to go with a upper 80’s fastball and developing change-up. It’s the same repertoire of a certain someone who used to pitch for the Green and Gold, only Ben shows more groundball tendencies.

He has improved those secondary pitches since the draft preview. His curveball was voted best in the A's minor league system.

From looking at his stats, he has a respectable but not great 7.1 K/9 this year, and a 3/1 K/BB ratio, and the WHIP's okay for the California League. He's had some gopheritis this year, although that's not unheard of in that league. A little old for the level. For a throw-in, he's not totally useless. Being left-handed helps.

Still has time to develop into a nice, servicable LH hurler. I like it.

He's basically a LOOGY on the fast track. To be honest, I was fairly happy with McBeth already, so the fact that Jukich doesn't scream excitement isn't that big a deal to me. I was obviously hoping for more, but I'm not surprised.

I really liked Deno, and with the overall finish point of the trade, I find that it was fairly equal from a trade value standpoint. It was just reallocating the assets, and I think Krivsky did a decent enough job on it.

    Nice call.

Who'd have thought the REDS were going to use a roper-dope strategy against Escobar on Tuesday. It worked to perfection.

The REDS let him beat them to death for six inning with 14 punchouts. When Escobar was too tired to pitch anymore, they let the Angels have it.

    What a strategy.

A lefty with a plus plus curve. Can't control his stuff for crap apparently, but I'll take organizational pitching depth.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
