Players who signed at age 18 or younger are exempt for five years while playes who signed at age 19 or older are exempt for only four years. The date 40 man rosters had to be set used to be November 20th, but I'm not sure if that changed in the last CBA (the years exempt did change).

Gardner signed in August, 2003, at the age of 21, meaning 2007 is his fourth (and presumably last) exemption year. It looks to me that Gardner will have to be added to the 40 man roster by this November if the Reds want to protect him from the Rule 5 draft this offseason.
The Lost Decade Average Season: 74-88
    2014-22 Average Season: 71-91

You would hope disabled list time would offset the clock, but that would be common sense. It might be a bit presumptuous to assume baseball would think that way.

Apitcher with those sorts of numbers in AA need to be protected on the 40 man. That shouldn't be a problem.

I think Gardner should probably garner a September call up this year if he keeps pitching at this level. That should solve the 40-man problem.

I am apprehensive to rush him back for two related reasons: his arm is still building strength and I would hate for him to over exhert and blow something after now making it back, and it seems he is getting by on fluff, he needs a few more mph on his heater before I would want him up.

I definitely se him as a possibility for 2008.
