    Fishin' trips 2007

A month or so back I spent 4 days fishing with a neighbor, my father, my brother, and a few friends. Historically the fishing has been excellent on this trip, but this year it was disappointing. I realized though, that I had a ball despite the slow action the fish were providing. We did get a chance to sit around a campfire, smoke cigars, and have a few tasty beverages as well as cook over an open campfire for every meal.

A few weeks ago Mrs. gonelong, myself, and little gonelong were pontooning around Indian Lake. I noticed quite a few people Saugeye fishing so I tossed a pole in the boat for our next trip aound the lake. We ended up catching 6 keepers in about an hour the next trip out, would have been more but I didn't even have a net with me and we lost a few at the boat. The Mrs. and little gonelong were happy to reel in a few.

Last week I was at Ft. Loramie bass fishing. I had 3 bass hooked and failed to land any of them, very disappointing. My neighbor began flippin' and caught his first Bass ever using that technique. I think I have a convert.

We are off to Indian Lake to do a bit of fishing this weekend. We'll probably just fish for catfish and bluegills as I'd like to give little gonelong a chance to catch a few fish.

Hope you are able to get a line wet and enjoy a morning, afternoon, or evening out.

    Good stuff, GL.

I've fished more this spring and summer than I ever have before. Thanks to some advice from fellow RZer, rdiersin, and a local guy who showed me some technique, I've learned to fly fish and it's really got my interest back in the hobby.

Learning how to fly fish opened me up to the idea of fishing the smaller streams in this area (Caesar Creek, 4 Mile Creek, 7 Mile Creek) and spending more time at the Little Miami, an excellent smallmouth fishery. There's nothing like fly casting into clear water and seeing a white bass (or even a blue gill) flash through moving water to hit your fly. Or watching a 15 pound carp seemingly engulf the wolly bugger that's at the end of your 5 weight rod and line with 6 pound tippet at the end.

I was bluegill fishing once and had a nymph on the line with my 5 wt. Then, I saw a grass carp in the pond. I got the bright idea to put it out in front of him. The cast was made, and it was a good cast, right where I wanted it. The carp hit the nymph. It was awesome for the whole 5 seconds he was on the line.

GL, nice trip. Its always nice to get the family involved. Can you get Mrs. Gonelong to talk to Mrs rdiersin? I have a hard time getting her interested in it at all.

Personally, I haven't gotten out much this year at all, so its nice to live vicariously through others. I will be moving soon so I haven't gotten much fishing in. Hopefully, in the fall and being closer, I will be able to go up to some Lake Michigan tribs.

I was kinda like you. I saw it coming. Sorta held the bugger there for him to get. Right as he took it I decided "this is not a good idea" especially since I was about thigh deep in the creek. So I hauled it back in and ended up tangling my line and leader in the trees over my head. Lost the bugger, but nothing else.

Mrs. Gonelong does not like to fish, she likes to catch.

Before the little fella came along we'd go fishing together and she'd mostly just take a book with her ... and occasionally a picnic lunch. I'd fish and she'd read, both of us enjoying a warm summer day and the leisurly pace of an afternoon with no destination or timeline looming.

If the fish were biting ... she'd put down her book and fish with me.

She will mostly just fish for bluegills, crappie, or catfish ... none of which require any special knowledge, talent, gear, or patience to catch once I have located them for her.

As much as I enjoy fishing ... some of the places I go I'd be just as happy sitting on the bank or in the boat without a fishing pole.

Here's a pic of a smallmouth I caught at Dale Hollow Lake this past Tuesday night.

Hey, another OGF member! Love that site.

I don't post there much... maybe 10 posts since I registered. Just reading trying to steal spots to fish and methods.

Nice smallie! What part of Dale Hollow do you guys fish?

    Re: Fishin' trips 2007

Any good places to fish around the Loveland/ Milford area? I refuse to do a pay lake. That's just foreign to me as I'm from upstate New York and never lacked for places to fish.

Also, I haven't fished in rivers much. How is the Little Miami? Any tips? Any special gear.

I'm pretty geared up for panfish and largemouth bass fishing which was always my target at home.

There is nothing better than floating around in a boat, pole in one hand, book in another, cold beverage between your feet. I've thought about getting one of those small personal pontoon boats ...... I just don't know if I have a lot of places to go nearby. Does Lake Isabella allow you to launch a personal craft, or do you have to rent one of their rowboats?

TC -- the LMR is very good fishing from the canoe rental places at Waynesville and Ft. Ancient all the way down to Milford if you know how to read water. If you're real nice, I might PM you a couple of my spots.

There's also a new fly shop there in "old Milford" that can put you on to some spots. Really nice guys there. A&N Outfitters -- they sell some spinning gear also, I believe. They have a website, but I don't have it bookmarked. Sorry.

I've been fly fishing on the LMR with some success but my b-i-l and f-i-l have had some nice catches on spinning gear with crawfish, small tubes and rooster tails.

The lake fishing in the Loveland/Milford area is not very good. I fish East Fork and Cowan, and they leave a lot to be desired. If there is enough water the LMR is a great alternative. I don't know if Isabella lets you launch your own boat, but i doubt it. The Hamilton County parks system operates it like a paylake. I have heard Sharon Woods is good for bass.
