Reds Top Pitching Prospect Cueto Joins Lookouts

Today, the Cincinnati Reds announced several moves affecting the Chattanooga Lookouts. RHP Johnny Cueto and RHP Ramon Ramirez have been added to the Lookouts’ roster, while RHP Richie Gardner and RHP Calvin Medlock have been promoted to Louisville.

Johnny Cueto has spent the vast majority of the 2007 season in Sarasota, where he posted a 5-2 record with a 4.05 ERA. In 73.1 innings, he notched 86 strikeouts against 25 walks. He also picked-up a win in one start for Louisville this season. Last season, he was selected as the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year by the Reds, after going 15-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 26 starts between Dayton and Sarasota. As a result of his stellar season, Baseball America tabbed him as the number four prospect in the Reds’ system.

Ramon Ramirez pitched in 15 games (12 starts) for Sarasota this season. He posted a 5-2 record to go with a 4.05 ERA. In 73.1 innings of work, the Venezuelan righty notched 86 strikeouts against 25 walks. Ramirez also spent the 2006 season in Sarasota, where he posted a 4.29 ERA in 15 games. He was originally signed by San Diego in 2000, but was released on 6/12/2000. The Reds signed him as a released player on 5/12/03.

Richie Gardner, who did not surrender a run in four of his six starts, ended his tenure with the Lookouts by going 2-1 with a 1.82 ERA.

Calvin Medlock proved to be a solid option out of the bullpen for the Lookouts, as he held the honor of being the only Lookouts’ arm to post a sub-4.00 ERA during the months of April, May, and June. In 47.2 innings of relief, Medlock struck out 59 batters to only five walks, resulting in a 2.64 ERA.

The first place Lookouts will host the Birmingham Barons for the series finale, Saturday at 7:15 at AT&T Field. The promotions for the night will be Christopher! Tickets for this game or any other Lookouts home game can be purchased at the Lookouts Box Office at AT&T Field, online at www.lookouts.com, or by calling (423) 267-4849.

Homer is the Reds top pitching prospect IMHO.
