This team doesn't know if it's supposed to be small ball or big fly. They need to figure out their game plan and execute accordingly. It's counter-productive to sac a man over if you're ultimately waiting for the HR.Originally Posted by degenerate10
This team is in the top half or top 10 in most offensive categories. Pitching, however, is near or at the bottom.
Unfortunately, our offensive stats aren't that great. Top 10 means absolutely nothing if you have these rankings:
27th in BA w/ bases loaded
29th in BA w/ RISP
29th in BA w/ RISP and 2 outs
and finally, dead last in the majors in BA in "close and late" games.
I'd be interested to see where the Reds rank in OPS (or even just SLG. %in those situations. While it's certainly not good to have a low BA in those situations, it just doesn't tell the whole story as to just how (in)effective the Reds are at scoring runs in those circumstances.

At any rate, it does reveal a critical flaw in the Reds' offense - one that would prevent them from ever really competing in the playoffs against formidable opposition.
Also, maybe it's just the depressing season that has me thinking this, but it seems as though while the Reds truly struggle in these situations, whoever they're playing against thrives - especially when they're facing our 'pen.

So no matter what anyone tells you, our offense with Griffey, Dunn, and others isn't very good IMO.
