    Random Thoughts

I say if Joe DiMaggio was not a first ballot Hall of Famer then Frank Thomas isn't.

And if Ozzie Smith was a first ballot Hall of Famer then Barry Larkin is.

The problem with this team is that too many of the things we complain about are not the problem.

Therefore I demand more answers and fewer non-problems.

What are the odds that Griffey will catch Dunn on the Reds all-time home run list?

We have to remember that Bob Castellini was talking to Lonnie Wheeler on a cellphone and may actually have said that Jerry Narron's a weiner.

Is it possible to play yourself out of the Hall of Fame?

Watching the Reds and Phillies bullpens is like watching two basketball teams that don't play defense.

Would a lineup of batters with the most all-time strikeouts defeat a lineup of batters with the lowest strikeout rate?

    Killer stuff, as usual.

Nobody in particular. I was just curious about guys with great careers that have been weakened by the last few years of mediocrity or worse. I wondered if a player could have a Hall of Fame career if he quit after, say, 15 years, but ruin it by playing five more bad years. It wouldn't seem fair.

I always thought Vada Pinson was hurt by his instant success plus the advent of the pitching era, but he's my poster child for that statement.

    Pinson age 19-27

    .301/.346/.480/.826 - Pinson
    .264/.328/.402/.730 - League

    Pinson age 28-36

    .269/.304/.399/.703 - Pinson
    .256/.324/.376/.700 - League

Good stuff as usual, but what if a lineup of the guys with the most all time strikeouts faced a pitching staff of pitchers with the lowest strikeout rates? Would that be the moveable (whiffable) force against the resistable (hittable) object?

I'd say Biggio would be a good target for that HOF statement. He has been awful the last five years.

Pinson was a major leaguer at 19?

    Wow.
