Does anyone else find it fishy that Bonds made up so many votes in the final days?

One report that I heard said he made up approx. 300,00 votes while another said 130,000. Either way, that's a huge bump in a matter of days.

I haven't scanned the internet for conspiracy theories but I did hear one radio guy float the idea.

    His ballot took steroids.
"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."

I don't care how it happened, I'm glad it did. Always like seeing the host team's reaction to their player(s) that make the team. Will make for an even more electric atmosphere seeing the soon to be HR king receiving numerous accolades from the Giants faithful.

Any Reds fan who quibbles about votes should check the AS Game and their teams history with fan voting.

We (ok, probably not all of us, but Reds fans) ruined fan voting for over a decade. To be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing it go back to no fan voting. It would take away non deserving players.

The Reds were still running ads in June saying go out and vote all the Reds starters to the all star game. I thought yea David Ross should be an All-Star starter.

That ad really bugged me. Anyone who is a real baseball fan will respect the integrity of the game well enough to vote for the best player at each position, but I think there aren't enough fans who see it that way. I have seen people at the games who sit there and just punch all the Reds players, while I take forever completing mine because I'm looking at each position and trying to pick the most deserving player, even if he plays for a team I don't like.

So....back to the question: was Bond's election fixed?

Seems fishy to me, unless that many Giants fans actually stuffed the ballot in the last week.

I think it was, I don't really think it's a big deal either, the allstar game long ago stopped being important in any way, MLB should just name who they want and who belongs, the voting is silly

I think it really depends on how those votes were made up. I have no problem with SF fans stuffing the ballot box. The whole point of fan voting is to encourage fan participation and generate fan interest. However, if the number of votes that found their way to Bonds were the result of some sort of jobbing the system by MLB to avoid the sticky situation of Bonds not starting in his own town, I'd have a real problem with that. For now I'll give MLB the benefit of the doubt and say it was fan voting.

First of all my guess is the Lion's share of Reds' fans on this forum weren't even born yet. To make them feel guilty for what happened before they were on this earth is akin to white guilt for slavery.

Secondly I'm not aware that any rules were broken nor vote totals fudged in 1957. We merely had a lot of enthusiastic Reds fans voting often for their players. Cincinnati took advantage of a flawed system.

So, because people (Reds fans) did it in the past, then it is OK to do it again for Bonds?

If I were JR I would tell the manager that if Bonds goes to the outfield without a drug test, I am walking of the field.

What I distain about Bonds is what he is doing to Hammerin' Hank. Nobody overcame more than Aaron to beat out the Babe. To have a slimmy self absorbed character like Bonds ruin all of it is sickening.

This precisely why I have balked at putting Pete in the HOF. You crown him as Mr. Baseball in doing so and make him a hero figure to kids who cannot see his shortcomings.

Yikes! I actually find myself agreeing with rila (at least the above part)!

Some show on ESPN this morning was commenting on this topic. Their speculation was that, since ballots are not verified (i.e., like the Oscars), that MLB may have fudged the count as a way to avoid the embarrassment of naming Bonds to the team in his hometown and during his attempt to pass Aaron. In other words, a way for Bud the Pud to not have to make a decision that he might find 'awkward'.
